Red 40 were a Jawbreaker-influenced trio from Little Rock, Arkansas. They began playing shows in and around the Little Rock area and released a demo in 1994 by the band themselves. Their first record, the Date at the Payphone seven-inch by Landmark Records, came out in the following year. Red 40 disbanded in 1996.

After the breakup of Red 40, bassist-vocalist Ben Nichols moved to Memphis, where he started a short-lived band called Lucky Old Sun which only ever recorded a demo and then founded Lucero. Colin Brooks lives in Brooklyn, NY and plays drum for Dan Zanes and Friends. Steve Kooms still lives in Little Rock and plays with various bands around town. A CD collecting the band’s recorded work was released in 1999, and reissued in 2005.
