New Jersey, United States (1980 – present)

Overkill is an American thrash metal band formed in 1980 in New Jersey. The band has been active since 1984, releasing 16 studio albums, 2 EPs, 2 live albums and a “covers” album. Despite their first album being released in 1985, most of the songs appearing on their first two albums were written between 1981 and 1984, and as such, they are sometimes hailed as the inventors of thrash metal.

The band also has a notable mascot (named Chaly), a skeletal bat with a skull-like face, bony wings, and green eyes. It has appeared on most of their album covers. Overkill has gone through many line-up changes, with singer Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni remaining the only consistent members. Along with Anthrax the band is one of the most successful East coast thrash metal bands.

Overkill was formed in 1980 from the ashes of the punk band The Lubricunts, featuring Rat Skates and D.D. Verni (real names Lee Kundrat and Carlo Verni). Verni and Skates placed an ad looking for a guitarist and singer which was answered by singer Bobby Ellsworth and the first incarnation of Overkill was formed. After rejecting several names, including “Virgin Killer”, the band finally settled on Overkill. Early covers, especially those done under the Virgin Killers name, were punk songs by Ramones, Dead Boys and others. By late 1980, the band had recruited two guitarists, and the setlist was made up of songs by bands such as Motörhead (“Overkill”, half of the Ace of Spades album), Judas Priest (‘Tyrant’ was their closer), and Riot.

I think Anvil were the ones who invented thrash, but Overkill are awesome regardless

@DRUM_MACHINA_: I think you have no idea what a discussion is. That you express your opinion over and over again with lame and childish adages is neither cool nor the meaning of a shoutbox. In internet slang is somebody like you called a troll.

@vonNachtmahr, why I may not express my opinion? Or haven't I understood you?

@ DRUM_MACHINA_: Right, the meaning of a shoutbox is to DISCUSS about the band. NOT to insult permanently the band. If you don't like Overkill it is alright but stop trolling around. There are absolutly no underlying reasons for such a behavior.

You obviously change the bits like "true thrash metal" and "OVERKILL" for different artists on LFM :P

Newsflash, going on artists you don't like and saying you don't like them just means you haven't got what it takes to listen to the almighty, the one and only, true thrash metal band of OVERKILL. :)

@vonNachtmahr, why have you made such a conclusion about my friends? And pease, don't continue this theme, this is shoutbox for discussing music, not personal life.

@ DRUM_MACHINA_: Do you have no friends in real life or why are you distinguish yourself with dull adages?

When somebody mows the grass with lawn mower and screams because it is cutting his balls, it sounds just like Overkill. [2]

Big Four this, Big Four that... to Hell with the "Big" Four! What, you need to be part of a group to be recognized? Are all other thrash bands shit, then?

    V Cool story...

    7 Apr 10:42am Reply

I remembered my first listening to Overkill. I was very little. I was walking in the park. Two men attacked from the back. Then they brought me to the small room and began to torch me. At the beginning they turned on Rammstein and Linkin Park, but I could endure that. But then they began torching me by songs of Overkill and that was awful. My ears feel pain even now, since 4 years, when I only read or hear the word "Overkill". When Overkill had been playing for 2 hours, I felt a strange taste on my tongue. I remembered that awful taste. I want to say you only one thing: if you want to kill or torcher a man, not a shit-eater, use Overkill, it always helps in such situations.
