Biography

Nanci Caroline Griffith, born July 6, 1953, is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter from Austin, Texas, United States. Her career has spanned a variety of musical genres, predominantly and , and what she terms “.”

She won a 1994 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album for Other Voices, Other Rooms, an album of Griffith covering the songs of artists who influenced her.

Her best-known song is From A Distance, by Julie Gold, although the version that achieved greater commercial success was not Griffith’s but Bette Midler’s (From A Distance). Similarly, other artists have occasionally achieved greater success with Griffith’s songs than Griffith herself: for example, Kathy Mattea, who had a country music top five hit with a 1986 cover (Love At The Five and Dime) of Love At The Five And Dime.

Nanci is one of the best singer/songwriters currently working. I first heard her work about 35-years ago when a friend shared a custom-made collection of her work on a cassette. Yep, it was a cassette. I wore it out.

Four of her current top five songs on here are covers - seems strange as she is a fantastic and prolific songwriter.

Yes, JulieOlberding, plenty of them... Other Voices/Other Rooms contains all covers. The other albums have original songs.

i'm so hopelessly in love with the pitch-perfect, stuff-dreams-are-made-of "other voices, other rooms" that i can't listen to anything else by nanci griffith.

Nanci was one of the main reasons I got into Country Music, her early albums were amazing, great vocals and lyrics. "Last of the True Believers" and "Lone Star State Of Mind" are her masterworks. I wish she would get back to that pure country sound.
