Biography

There is more than one artist with this name.

1) Formed in 1998 by Lloyd James and Joanne Owen. Often categorised as part of the ‘neo-folk’ genre, their songs also have similarities with acts such as Swans and Wire. Lloyd James of Naevus releases solo material under the name Retarder and is also a member of the groups Lark Blames and Man Eat Man Eat Man. 2) A German doom-metal band founded by guitarist and vocalist Uwe Groebel of Voodooshock fame. Formed in 1991 they first sounded like a slow death-metal band in the vein of Anathema / My Dying Bride / Asphyx, but over the years Naevus’ sound developed a doomer edge picking up influences from Black Sabbath and Cathedral. Naevus recorded three demos and finally in 1996 signed a deal with Lee Dorrians’ Rise Above Records in London, England. Naevus’ debut album, Sun Meditation, was recorded in 1997 and released in 1998. In 1999, they were let go from the label due to lack of funds and a change in distribution, so the band decided to split in May that year.

Chalk is so valuable that I decided (under good advice) to keep it in my hand.

This band sounds like Ennio Morricone mixed with Death In June. Fantastic!

Cryptofa began as an in-joke, a response to accusations being levelled against last.fm users based on their musical tastes that they were nazis (and various attempts to have people who listen to 'nazi' music, often as defined by the accuser banned, or have last.fm not register plays by 'nazi' artists). The idea was built around the simple absurdity of calling oneself a crypto-fascist; identifying as such is automatically an oxymoron. Many of the original people involved in the group were left-wing, myself included; like all things it mutates and has grown a bit out of hand. The tag was originally applied to artists connected to the cryptofa group, who were routinely accused of fascist sympathies with little or no evidence. It is overused thoughtlessly, and the original idea has become obscure, but there's the origin.

Every single Martial/Neofolk band around here gets the cryptofa tag. There are a few that I KNOW PERSONALLY, and they are actually left-wing. Quit abusing that silly 'cryptofa' tag for everyone who is merely trying to make aggressive, thought-provoking music.

o noes nazi's! if i shouldn't listen to music by people who have other ideas on how the world should work i would have a very small amount of artists to listen to left.

There is absolutely nothing "fa" about Naevus, "crypto" or otherwise.

    The Cryptofa tag looks ridiculous.

I agree with Thrica, Silent Life does not sound martial at all, people get carried away with tags.

Silent Life strikes me more as dark indie rock than martial neofolk, but in their case that's not such a bad thing.

Greetings! I admire you music! It's good that there is TRUE music in this spoiled world. I've written music for Ezra Pound's poem, please listen and I'm interested in your opinion. It is only 30 seconds here, but at R&R it is full You can view my profile here http://randrworld.com/Vinceremo/ Btw, this network offers many benefits for artists so I would like to see you at http://randrworld.com/ Don't forget to add me to friends cause I suppose our views are similar!
