Madder Rose was a New York City-based band who recorded in the 19. The band was fronted by Mary Lorson, who shared songwriting duties with guitarist Billy Coté. Several of their songs, including “Panic On” and “Car Song”, were featured in John Peel’s end of year roundup the Festive Fifty. The band released three albums on Atlantic Records and one on independent label Thirsty Ear before breaking up in 1999. Their music has been described as suggesting the languor of a heroin high, which inspired the British music press to trumpet Madder Rose as the second coming of the Velvet Underground. Their sound progressed from rock, not unlike peers Velocity Girl and Juliana Hatfield, to and . After the breakup, Lorson founded the outfit Saint Low.

Bring It Down is one of the few albums I actually love unconditionally, it's fuzzy, it's dreamy, it's stark, it makes me wanna dance & it gives me goosebumps. It's perfect late night listening still & I've owned for nearly 18 years now.

Following on from my 07 shout I did buy Panic On...certainly one of the most underrated albums of all time. I need to get Bring it Down for the song Swim. Hard to get.

I've just remembered! After the last track on The Panic On CD it had a load of 0 length tracks (and on that was 1 second of silence) and then track 99 had another short track on it! Those were the days when people really messed around with CD track layouts, you don't really see that anymore.

I heard these guys of the radio and brought the Panic On album - I loved that album! Then, at Uni, I lent it to a mate who lent it to someone else (Dave - you were an idiot for that!) and that guy refused to give it back (Steve Haffingdon you are a thieving git!). I really have to get myself another copy of the thing. Car Song was great.

The Car Song EP is possibly in my all-time top 10 of great EPs. It has Car Song (obviously), Johnny Take a Ride, The Widow Song, and Holiday. Utter perfection.
