"Telephone" tell the story of someone dancing in a club without wanting to pick up their phone, even when several people are calling them. The first verse emphasizes the difficulty of dealing with phone calls when in a noisy environment. The chorus and post-chorus have Lady Gaga repeating the phrase "stop callin" - a clear indication that she does not want to answer her phone. The second verse, sung by Beyoncé, expresses the sense of urgency felt by the caller as the person being called doesn’t even answer. The bridge reveals the reason why the person being called won’t answer his/her phone — they are dancing and enjoying themselves with no desire to distract themselves. The refrain communicates the frustration of the caller at not being able to reach their loved one while they are enjoying themselves. In the end, Gaga and Beyoncé are telling their listeners to make the most of their nights, while also reminding them to be mindful of obligations they have back home.
