About this album

Donuts was made on a hospital bed and in a home studio on a stripped-down setup with a stack of vinyl. Released on its maker’s 32nd birthday three days before he passed away, the album has a resonance deeper than anyone could’ve hoped for or even imagined. Some who were close to Dilla have said that there are hidden messages in the samples, track titles, and who knows where else. On Metacritic, Donuts received “universal acclaim” from critics based on an aggregate score of 84/100 from fifteen reviews.

My personal favorite album of all time. When I first bought this, I was going through the toughest year of my life, personally, and this album was a great treat in those days. It's simple, it's creative, it's emotional. Even now, when shit is rough I sometimes throw this on and zone out for the next 40 minutes. IMO the greatest rap producer of all time, and a musical genius. Rest in beats.

It just keeps getting better [3] I am about 28 full-listens into this album and I have yet to get bored of listening to it. There's enough going on in this record to keep the most impatient of people interested.

I've always wondered about the Donuts track list. The name of the tracks, the order, everything seems very deliberate. It just dawned on me tonight, after years of listening to the album that I think that maybe it is supposed to be played on repeat in its entirety. The Outro track is called "Welcome to the Show (Intro)" and the Intro track is called Donuts (Outro). To me this symbolizes a continuous project the end flows into the beginning and the beginning flows into the end. Like a circle, like a fucking Donut. Perhaps it symbolizes life and death or something, the perfect ending. No one is lost in death, we all just flow back into the ether. The circle of life. This album give me the feels every time I listen to it. It has helped me get through a lot of shit over the years. Thank you Jay Dee, for everything.

I find this one extremely overrated. I don't understand the excitement.
