"In My Sleep" concludes Inhaler's debut album "It Won't Always Be Like This".

Elijah Hewson, the lead vocalist, discussed the song in an Apple Music interview:

"When we did it, it felt like such a big Thin Lizzy moment, almost. We were like, ‘Oh god, it reminds me of being at home,’ that kind of music you listen to as a kid. And we put some uilleann pipes in there, which are an Irish instrument, and it really felt like us. It embodied that feeling of coming home after a tour. It just felt really natural to put at the end. It’s a send-off."

The song appears to touch upon themes of escapism, yearning, and emotional vulnerability. The lyrics depict a desire to disconnect from the waking world and find solace in the realms of dreams.

In the verses, the narrator describes feeling lost and overwhelmed during the day, but finding release and freedom in their sleep. The line "I don't know where I am, I don't care" suggests a willingness to let go of reality for a while and surrender to the unconscious mind. This may reflect a desire to escape from the pressures and responsibilities of life, seeking refuge in the world of dreams.

The chorus emphasizes the recurring motif of finding solace and respite in sleep. It becomes a comforting and safe space where the narrator can find temporary relief from their troubles and worries. The repetition of the phrase "In my sleep" reinforces this escape and indicates a yearning for this state of mind.

The post-chorus alludes to a potential relationship dynamic, with the narrator expressing a desire for a partner who can understand their need for emotional distance or shut-off. The phrase "When you turn off, it feels so much better" suggests that the narrator feels a sense of relief when their partner reciprocates this emotional detachment. This may indicate a preference for a connection that allows them to retreat into their own thoughts and dreams without feeling overwhelmed by emotional intensity.

The outro repeats the idea of meeting someone in sleep, indicating a desire to connect with others on a deeper level or find solace together in this shared dream-like state.

Overall, "In My Sleep" portrays the idea of finding refuge from reality and seeking solace within the realm of dreams. It explores the longing for emotional detachment and the potential for deeper connection in the dream world.
