Biography

Germany (1980 – present)

Holy Moses is a German band. They are well noted for being fronted by Sabina Classen, which is rare for a woman to be a singer in thrash metal, and for being one of the very first German thrash metal bands.

Holy Moses was officially formed in Aachen, Germany in 1980 with Jochen Funders on guitars and vocals, Ramon Bruessler on bass, and drummer Peter Vordenstein. They played their first live show in the town of Stolberg, where they began causing a significant buzz in the heavy metal community for their incredibly heavy, fast, and tight style and various other actions of the band’s fanclub. However, this lineup was very short lived, and only lasted about a year, after the band played their first anniversary show by opening for Venom.

A new guitarist was soon found, in Andy Classen, formerly of the band Disaster. A vocalist named Iggy was soon found as well. Iggy was soon fired from the band due to drug problems and musical differences with the band. Andy soon came up with the idea to bring in his girlfriend at the time, Sabina Hertz for the vocals. Originally, Sabina does not want the job and singing in a very throaty and almost demonic sounding style of singing to make sure she does not get in the band.

If you're looking for some serious amount of brutality and rawness, then you should start with Finished with the Dogs. For more of a progressive album with thrash roots and less rawness & brutality, go with The New Machine of Liechtenstein.

I tried SPWP, and well, I prefer old school thrash. Which of their early albums will be a good one to start with? (the best, I mean :0)

The new album is good, the drums are clear and the bass lines are very impressive. But Sabina literally screeches in some songs (for example: the chorus of Hellhound), which I found kind of disturbing. I think she tries to sound like how she did in Master of Disaster EP... Kind of impossible to happen, considering that she's 50 now.

Yes, I compare Holy Moses and Arch Enemy because of vocalists, female, of course. When I first had heard Arch Enemy (4 or 5 years ago), I got opinion about Angela that she is one the best female metal vocalist without clean vocals like clean and female in Nightwish. I think in this way till the first listen of Holy Moses, it was some years ago too. Today I understand that this compare is wrong for many reasons, but in my mind I keep it, maybe, becouse of memories of the past days... Any way, you must understand very well that it's only my opinion and I don't give a fuck if I'm right or not.

Why compare Holy Moses and Arch Enemy? Because both have female vocalists? If that's so, you can compare 4-Non Blondes and Nightwish, after all, both have female vocalists. Besides, Holy Moses is light-years ahead of Arch Enemy when it comes to playing metal.
