”A New Tradition” is the new single from the band Epithets, and is taken from their forthcoming 12” EP of the same name.

Following a cultishly revered demo in 2010, and their much-lauded debut LP “Year Of Glad” in 2011, the band’s prolific nature continues in parallel with their unrelentingly self-enforced musical growth. Recording for the first time with acclaimed engineer Cameron Smith (No Anchor, DZ Deathrays, Velociraptor) and mastered again by Harris Newman (Arcade Fire , Broken Social Scene, Godspeed You! Black Emperor), the songs herein show a marked growth in the band’s confidence, striving to extend on both their populist tendencies and vigour for experimentation.

The entire EP was written collaboratively by the band, amidst the preparation for (and prolonged recovery from) their 2011 Australian tour, and reflects the extensive time and consideration devoted to their craft. As obsessive students of the Australian underground, the band credits diverse influences in steering their present trajectory, from Sandpit and Bluetile Lounge to The Leap Year and Purplene, not to mention an all encompassing Go-Betweens fixation.

In spite of the band’s ever-present flare for convoluted timing and dense lyricism, the EP’s eponymous single plays out as one of their most deceptively straightforward tracks to date. With its chiming 12-string guitar and irrepressible glockenspiel hook, the song seems ideally suited to lodging itself in one’s memory, never mind its lyrical neurosis.
