Virginia’s own D.R.A.M. teams up with Atlanta-via-the-Internet sensation Lil Yachty for this upbeat ode to the lord of the vegetable kingdom: weed.
The duo flexed their viral muscle by releasing the single on SoundCloud originally, where it became a sleeper hit and migrated to the big streaming services.
This is actually neither the first nor only rap song named “Broccoli.” All-time Bay Area legend E-40 released his own song named for the cruciferous comestible way back in 1998.
On June 21, 2016 the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 87.
The video for the song was released on July 22, and features D.R.A.M and Yachty riding around on a piano and waving bits of actual broccoli in the air.
D.R.A.M said in a verified Genius annotation:
"At first, it was the piano with the drum loop, we had the flute and when that went in, everyone started vibing. Yachty started on his verse and I didn’t have any bars at first so I told him to go in. When he left, I didn’t even have my verse, I just had the bridge.
It was just good timing. It turned into something more than I expected, to be honest, I thought it’d be something dope for Soundcloud and just good for the culture. But the fact that it’s bleeding into every facet of the musical charts, it’s dope as hell."
