Biography

Doug Stanhope (born March 25, 1967) is an American stand-up comedian. Stanhope’s career began in 1990 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was the host of Comedy Central’s The Man Show for its two final seasons and has appeared on ABC’s The View. He has also produced and starred in “Invasion of the Hidden Cameras” (a project for the Fox Broadcasting network). Stanhope has made appearances at several major comedy festivals, including the Montreal Just For Laughs, US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado, the Chicago Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, where he won the Strathmore Press Award in 2002. Stanhope was the winner of the San Francisco Comedy Competition. He has released several CDs.

A self-confident drug user, libertarian and agnostic, Stanhope’s humor can convey nihilism despite life-celebrating enthusiasm. His irate opposition to puritanical hysteria and superstition invites comparison with Bill Hicks. He frankly describes ‘deviant’ sexual activity and sometimes gruesome personal stories gleefully, blurring the lines between an “adventurous spirit” and full-blown “sicko”. Stanhope violently opposes the gradual erosion of American civil liberties, particularly in his recent performances such as Deadbeat Hero.

You've misunderstood me if you took my position as anti-drug. I'm all for drug use. I was referring to Hicks' Deepak Chopra-esque New Age pseudo-philosophical serious bits. His "spiritual" spiels are quite vapid and stereotypical if you're familiar with drug culture. It brings his act down quite a bit for me. And there's nothing inherently wrong with lowbrow humor; it can be done with a lot of finesse (like Airplane!, for instance). I simply don't enjoy lowbrow humor in stand-up comedy and when I'm in the mood for more intelligent comedy like Hicks', it's always a bit disappointing when a bit comes around where it's just him shouting and making silly noises and voices. Just a personal quibble of mine.

Both Stanhope and Hicks are great men.. Regarding the whole drug discussion. Stanhope is basicaly of the same opinion as Hicks were, on how some drugs can help expand your mind and make you realise stuff you havent notied before.. I myself have had experiences with psychedelic drugs, and yes it was an eye-opening experience in most cases. No matter how pretentious that may sound to some of you.. BTw whats wrong about being lowbrow?

I'm just being facetious when I say that so bluntly (obviously there's no such thing as "better"), but I do prefer Stanhope by a mile. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that Hicks was like a pre-Stanhope Stanhope and was a pioneer for more abrasive and intelligent comedy (in the same way as Lenny Bruce and George Carlin) and when he was on top he was fantastic ("Pro-life" for instance.) But all of the New Age-y, pseudo-philosophical stuff just comes off as really corny. The fact that he constantly talks about how philosophical and nonconformist he is and that everyone needs to catch up to him is a bit presumptuous, especially when his "deep" and "philosophical" non-joke rants amount to the same New Age drug-babble you hear from pothead teenagers at every college campus in America. The third eye catch phrase thing is vomit-inducing. And a lot of the shouting and funny noises he makes are quite lowbrow. He's got great material, it's just marred by the "I did drugs once, I'm deep" stuff.

Come on now! Stanhope is in his 40's. Hicks died at 32, not fair to compare them... Stanhope makes me laugh harder than any other Stand-Up (Yes even more than Greg Propps and Todd Barry), but there was something very unique and cathartic about Hicks way of approaching stand-up, which no other Comedian even gets near in my book! Rant in E-Minor in particular

His show in Albany was so fucking incredible. He brings more energy to the stage by himself than most bands do.

This guy is unique in his way of talking truth in a funny way. He's more of a satirist than of a comedian.
