Kolbotn, Oslo, Norway (1986 – present)

Darkthrone is an influential Norwegian band. They formed in 1986 as a group in Kolbotn, Norway. After embracing the style in 1991, they became a driving force in the Norwegian scene. For most of this period Darkthrone has consisted of just two musicians; Fenriz and Nocturno Culto. They claim to be influenced by punk and have sought to remain outside the music mainstream. Recently their music has incorporated more traits.

The band that would become Darkthrone formed during 1986 in Kolbotn, a small suburb of Oslo. They were a death metal group by the name of Black Death, and its members were Gylve Nagell, Ivar Enger and Anders Risberget. In 1988 the band changed their name to Darkthrone and were joined by Ted Skjellum and Dag Nilsen. During 1988 and 1989 the band independently released four demo tapes: “Land of Frost”, “A New Dimension”, “Thulcandra”, and “Cromlech”.

They were subsequently signed to the independent record label Peaceville Records with a four album contract. In 1990 they recorded their first studio album, Soulside Journey. The album was cleanly-produced in a technical death metal style, although there were some elements of black metal present, in terms of the album’s music and imagery.

Immediately following the release of this album, the band continued writing and recording new material. These demos were entirely instrumental but they demonstrated the band’s gradual shift towards black metal. In 1997 they would be released on a compilation album entitled Goatlord.

@poserdisposer90 Saying so, you are acting like a black metal hipster. Darkthrone are pioneers of '90s black metal. Others had just copied the style.

Of all the black metal bands that came out of Norway in the early 1990's Mayhem and Darkthrone are the weakest. Now they play hipster music.

"darkthrone=mayhem=burzum единственный правильный вариант" - это да. Но только тот Мэйхем,который был с Dead'ом.После его смерти группа скатилась в дерьмо.

Their styles best to worst; Death Metal > Black Metal > current stuffs. I think i like their Soulside Journey album more than Black Metal albums even if they're considered as cult albums in BM history.

@Krvoslednik Come on, that's nothing hipster in newer Darkthrone. It's 'black' metal itself an hipster thing. How can you call 'hipster' someone who plays CLASSIC heavy metal?

I'm a bit surprised that Soulside Journey is not a top album.

Isn't Goatlord just a demo album anyway?

*A Blaze in the Northern Sky > Under a Funeral Moon >* Sardonic Wrath > Soulside Journey > Transilvanian Hunger = Panzerfaust > The Cult is Alive > Ravishing Grimness = Hate Them. Rest of their releases are equal, aside from Goatlord which imo is definitely their worst [2]

Listen to old Darkthrone during a cold day; pause and take a shower with cold water and listen to "Transilvanian Hunger."

One can hope for a release similar to that Arnaut Pavle demo instead of another hipster album. Of course it's more profitable and fun to host silly radio shows that teach kids ways of revisionism, and it's always helpful to have something to play there.
