Founded in 2001, the sextet play timeless, downbeat music that is rich in nuances, draws from numerous sources and doesn’t really have any obvious fellow creatures or point of comparisons.

Callisto’s debut “True Nature Unfolds” (2004) received an enthusiastic response and earned the band a worldwide license deal with the British Earache Records.

The band’s sophomore album “Noir” was released in 2006 exceeding all the high expectations set by the debut. Still drawing from modern sludge, “Noir” also introduced subtle jazz leanings, heavy use of mellotron and experimentation with unconventional rock instruments such as the saxophone and the flute.

Never interested in repeating themselves, in 2009 Callisto took a bold step further from their earlier, more instrumental material and composed a vocal record presenting a new member Jani Ala-Hukkala taking on vocal duties. The songs on ”Providence” are built upon layers of melodies, using a broader palette they’ve coloured their sound with twangy guitars, mellotrons, prog rock overtones and a singing style that can be traced back to 90’s-era vocalists like Chris Cornell and the late Layne Stayley. Both those familiar and new to the band will find a lot to digest in the majestic compositions and cryptic lyrics which often revolve around Christian themes, having a lot in common with their influences Trouble and Woven hand.

i'm being as objective as i possibly can.. but i hear no repetitiveness whatsoever in Providence.. the compositions are more diverse, the use of instruments is more carefully considered and skillful.. the broadening of vocal use adds to the spectrum of emotions represented.. and the atmospheres just show more colour. but as to your listening of Providence.. 'several times' isn't a real listen. i've given the album probably over 60 spins, and it still feels like there's so much left to hear. with Noir, 10 spins and i felt like i knew all the songs. "As I've stated before, the album repeats itself. Why can't you accept the fact my opinion is different than yours?" - of course i can accept that your opinion is different.. but my problem is that i strongly feel that Providence is being received very unfairly. it's the album of the year in my book, i don't understand how such brilliant music can be ignored by so many

I've listened to the album through several times and I don't find it on the same level as Noir. As I've stated before, the album repeats itself. Why can't you accept the fact my opinion is different than yours? We're both looking for different things in music and more so, Callisto's music. I find Wormwood, Ladderday Saints, and Pathos to be better than any songs on Providence. But, Where the Spirits Tread, Dying Mouths and Providence are all excellent songs (Dying Mouths being one of my favorite Callisto songs)

what on earth do you base your standards for creativity on? Providence has twich as much substance as Noir. and i think you haven't given it a REAL listen because like most others, you can't hear Providence for what it is, but instead struggle to defend their less evolved albums
