Biography
Brown Like Dirt is a despicable group of humans. Scott Rankin and Ron Rankin (the brothers) have been playing, creating, and performing music of all styles and descriptions together since Ron could bang on a pot with a spoon. From the experience they gathered writing funk, punk, rock, folk and math rock they discovered something about popular music - it rots and has noises and sounds that just don't matter. They've now brought song writing to the forefront and have done away with all the extras that take away from it. Most importantly - no drum kit. Ron provides the rhythm on a Djembe and with Paul Bauman's experience with auxiliary percussion the cumbersome and tired sound of what has become rock and or roll is brought back down to the roots of rhythm. The beat. Steve Janicas fills out the bottom with some smooth bass while Scott lets his roots in Bluegrass creep to the surface to form a unique sound. (except for all the other bands that sound just like them) The lyrics have three simple rules: don't say baby (unless talking about an actual baby), don't say la, do, bah, or yeah, and most importantly attempt to write something intelligent. The band currently calls greater Hamilton, Ontario, Canada home. They call their music Dirtabilly.
