babyface's contribution to & influence on late 80's and 90's r&b is impossible to overstate. as a production force, he's responsible for the biggest hits of the 90's in two record breaking songs by boyz II men. but as an artist, he's often overlooked. babyface dropped his debut album in 1986 but that was before laface productions began their take over of the r&b/pop charts with the whispers in 1987 & bobby brown in 1988-89. when face dropped his second cd, tender lover in the summer of 1989 it was on. this was in the days of cassettes, so side 2 was all slow jams, starting with the lovely whip appeal & from there to a huge hit from the fall of '89, soon as i get home. tender lover sold 3 million copies and made babyface an r&b/pop kingmaker. he'd keep his title on the strength of his compositions well into the late 90's. do not overlook his first cd either: lovers is as good a slow jam as any that made the tender lover album. plus, his jam two occasions w/ the deele is an r&b classic.
