Born February 6, 1969, in New London, CT, Tony Baldwin grew up the son of a wandering family, living in Connecticut, Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico throughout his youth, exposed to various forms of music, from folk and bluegrass to Mexican mariachi and norteñas. Tony Baldwin plays folk acoustic rock music influenced by the likes of James Taylor, Bruce Cockburn, Simon & Garfunkel, Jim Croce, Don McClean, Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead, and with additional influences from Latin American music, 60s psychedelia, 70s art rock, 80s and 90s alternative groups like REM and the Smiths, as well. He claims Garcia from the Dead, Bruce Cockburn, Peter Buck and the Edge as his greatest influences. Tony made his stage debut in 1987, playing guitar with Corban, a band playing covers from bands as far ranging as Kansas to U2, as well as some original materials. Corban featured Tony’s brother, Steve on vocals, and bass player, John Fogg, and a rotating percussion section.
While at Purdue University in the 90’s he played with Greenhouse, a pop/alternative/rock cover band playing tunes by REM, U2, the Cure, Pink Floyd, Squeeze, and others. Upon leaving Greenhouse, Baldwin joined with Mark Lechman in the Hungie Bungies with whom he finally aired his own original material and made his first recordings, releasing the album “Fun Things in the Kitchen” in 1991, which featured folksy psychedelic tunes with brooding lyrics like “Pale Social” and “Atwell”.
