Description
One of London's top music festivals now in its sixteenth year. Thousands of visitors are attracted every summer by artists of international reputation and young musicians embarking on their careers.
The festival is unusual in that it makes a significant surplus which is given to charity. For 2007 Toynbee Hall received £51,000, and the North London Hospice £17,000.
But what really makes Proms at St Jude's so special is the venue, St Jude's Church, which is renowned for its fine acoustics. This magnificent building is considered to be Edwin Lutyens' finest accomplishment. It is one of only two twentieth century buildings to feature in The Times' guide, "England's thousand best churches".
St Jude's is located at the heart of Hampstead Garden Suburb, an environment of international architectural significance. The eminent architectural historian, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, described it as "that most nearly perfect example of the unique English invention and speciality, the garden suburb". Heritage walks in the Suburb are a popular feature of the festival programme.
