'A Cosmic and Earthly History of Recorded Music according to MISSISSIPPI Records'

A film & talk presentation by Eric Isaacson + LIVE sets by:
• Marisa Anderson
• Lori Goldston
• Dragging An Ox Through Water

De Player is proud to present a once in a blue moon showcase that features a brand new live film/talk/slide show presentation by Eric Isaacson (Mississippi Records label boss and store owner) plus three live acts, all of whom have released records on the Mississippi Record label.

MISSISSIPPI Records is a modern day record phenomena. Based in Portland, Oregon, it is a local shop and a outernational record label that releases unheralded lost classics from all over the globe; collections of Harry Smith's anthologies, Alan Lomax's recordings, quick off the shelf undercover albums (that sell out pretty much as soon as they are made) - all truly amazing compilations that wear the compilers tastes loud and proud.

Mississippi Records has produced over 280 LP's & cassettes that defy borders, with unheard songs and sounds that where being left under the bed, out in the shed and unloved by most record companies. They have managed to do this on a shoestring budget, without ever advertising or engaging in promotion of any kind & distributing only through DIY avenues.

Eric Isaacson will be our guide through the highs and lows of music history with a keen eye on the marvellous outsider types. His live presentation is a combination of film, slide show, lecture and soundscape. It instinctively and idiosyncratically illustrates an entire history of recorded music, from the birth of the first star in the universe all the way to the dark ages of the 1980's.

MARISA ANDERSON (Portland)
Marisa's impressive guitar and lap steel music is inspired by Delta blues, West African guitar music, oldies country and western radio, gospel, noise, rhythms, cycles, mortality, and praise. Like Lori Goldston, Anderson's track record lists collaborations and performances with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sharon Van Etten and others.

LORI GOLDSTON (Seattle)
Classically trained and rigorously de-trained, Lori Goldston's cello playing is full, textured and original. She wanders recklessly across borders that separate genre, discipline, time and geography. Her music carries a certain level of austerity and gravitas, though it never comes off as cold. Lori's collaborations famously include collaborations and performances with Nirvana, The Wedding Present, David Byrne and Cat Power. She also co-founded Black Cat Orchestra and has been key to Earth live shows.

DRAGGING AN OX THROUGH WATER (Portland)
This solo project of Brian Mumform is rooted in folk and country, complimented with textures of feedback, drones, tape hiss, and homemade oscillators. Chance elements and candlelight sensitive instruments destabilizes Brian's music & introduces improvisation to his songs. He plays in e.g. Jackie-O Motherfucker, Sun Foot, runs a small cassette & CD-R label (Musical Impressions or muim000), and has collaborated with John Wiese, Makino Takashi, John Butcher, Vic Chesnutt, Pete Swanson and others.
