Description

Mansion x Scion Sessions present...

V I S I O N S

We’re very proud to announce the second edition of Visions, now located at the 500-person brick-and-beam loft occupied by Twist Gallery (1100 Queen St. W), with Berlin-based pop/techno legend Jimmy Edgar, acclaimed experimental UK producer Actress, and Toronto-to-Berlin transplant XI making his hometown debut.

Visions II marks the Toronto debut of Jimmy’s live MAJENTA show, an audio/visual LED whirlwind meant to induce synaesthesia while channelling the stripped-down vintage vibes of Motor City techno and electro from his latest EP Majenta.

Co-headlining is Actress, who touches down in Toronto for the first time (ever) following the release of his masterful third album R.I.P - a work which received universal acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Pitchfork, Fact Magazine, Mix Mag, Spin, Resident Advisor, and many more.

XI, recently dubbed one of Toronto’s ‘new guard’ in a Resident Advisor feature, returns to Toronto after over a year spent overseas in Berlin. From his humble start in Scarborough, to his current reputation as one of the most influential underground artists from Toronto today, his return marks one of his most anticipated sets.

Earlier sets by Actress and XI will be supported visually by mixMotion’s Brady Bothwell.

Jimmy Edgar always seemed like he’d probably be best off in Berlin. The Detroit-born producer/singer’s music often evokes the ambience of a city where the weekends can last all week and sex swings form part of legitimate club-going practice. Since moving to the city and putting out his recent LP, Majenta, on Hotflush, the producer’s embrace of techno’s second birthplace appears complete.

Influenced mostly by Jazz, funk, street beat and r&b in these early years, he began his musical pursuit by playing the drums in experimental bands and by making tape recordings. Most of these recordings, consisting mainly of pitch bent tape loops, cut edits, field recordings, and noise tracks, were the beginning of his experimentation with the technical aspects of production.

Actress has not only made it onto almost every important music journalists’ ‘album of the year’ lists, but also released some of the most indescribable, mind bending sounds to come out of the UK. Most call him a ‘techno producer’ but with such an immense catalogue of work (including the highly regarded RIP and Splazsh) it almost seems an insult to categorize him so simply. Ageless, genreless and timeless releases have solidified his reputation as one of the UK dons of electronic production.

+ XI (New Kanada, Berlin/TO)

Christian Andersen has never been one for genres and his productions as XI are no exception. His production-style, while often given simple tags, deserves a more nuanced description: Chop-suey beats, combined with complex sampling techniques highlight some of XI’s strengths. However, it’s his ability to create depth and take listeners on a journey within his productions that has him at the forefront of the next wave of bass music.

With his story well underway, XI is quickly gaining a reputation for crafting intelligent bass music that maintains a respect for the past, while hinting strongly at the future of electronic music.
