v disappointed tbh. i think "Retrograde" may be his best song, but the rest just doesn't stack up. really love "Digital Lion," but it's not flawless. on first listen i can leave the rest except for "To the Last" and "Our Love Comes Back." bonus track is basically one of his best remixes ever though (that's Big Boi's vocals -- surprised it's being released as a Blake song and not a remix)

that's their one brilliant record

i feel like it's at its best when phoenix keeps their goals modest -- "trying to be cool," "drakkar noir," "don't" all deliver, albeit on pretty limited promise. i think they needed to change their sound up big time and do something adventurous like Alphabetical again (my favorite album of theirs by a longshot) after really nailing the pop efficiency thing on Wolfgang (second favorite). nothing here even attempts that, beyond making the guitars a little bit More Eighties.

it's definitely not all there. mostly feels unfinished and kind of scattered to me. their long songs have never really convinced me, and "bankrupt!" doesn't help -- it's got some very pretty moments and sections, but they don't really cohere as a whole.

never thought i'd come across someone with beirut and jonathan boulet as their top 2 artists. starstruck atm.

Um, I obviously like it since it's Beirut, but I'm such a sucker for horns and The Rip Tide was more keyboard than horns, though it did have it's moments. it just wasn't as 'big' if you know what I mean by that. my favorite album is The Flying Club Cup, then closely behind, Gulag Orkestar.
