Glad you liked "Slow Dazzle"! I think, on balance, I prefer "Fear" and "Helen Of Troy" but I certainly wouldn't describe it as "weak". Rightly or wrongly (according to me or most critics and Neil Young fans respectively) I love "Trans", particularly the CD version of "Sample and Hold" (which is mixed differently from the LP version to its benefit) and "Computer Age". I was listening to it (again) this morning and particularly appreciating the last 30 seconds or so of "Computer Age", which may well be the high point of Neil Young's 80s output for me.

The first track on "Slow Dazzle", incidentally, is called "Mr. Wilson" and is about John Cale's love for Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. Supposedly Brian Wilson thought it was sarcastic (and John Cale accepted that that wasn't an unreasonable interpretation) but John Cale was/is a big fan of Brian Wilson. I'm glad you enjoyed "Fear", hopefully you can find some stuff to enjoy amongst his other albums too!

Well (inevitably) I was a big fan of the Velvet Underground and (inevitably) Last.fm told me that if I liked The Velvet Underground I should check out John Cale. I got "Paris 1919" listened to it once and then promptly forgot about it until Lou Reed died about a year later... Coincidentally I also came into a small amount of money on that day and so immediately went to eBay to buy up the Lou Reed albums I didn't already own (so like "Mistrial" and some other lesser albums) but realising that probably wouldn't fill the void I also ordered John Cale's "The Island Years" which contains "Fear", "Slow Dazzle" and "Helen Of Troy" plus a handful of bonus tracks. That must've been late September 2013... I remember listening to it walking home drunk from town pretty early on, but his albums (including the overlooked "Paris 1919") finally clicked with me in November when I got the flu and spent a load of time listening to The Island Years and playing Crash Bandicoot.

"Helen Of Troy" is less heavy than "Slow Dazzle", but almost as cathartic and more experimental. It was released without John Cale's permission before he considered the songs to be finished. In my opinion, the songs are not noticeably unfinished and this premature release possibly contributed to the urgency and emotional-intensity on tracks such as "Engine", "I Keep A Close Watch" and "Leaving It Up To You". Also present is a somewhat wacky cover of The Modern Lovers' "Pablo Picasso" which was released before the original version that John Cale produced in 1972.

"Slow Dazzle" was written and released in the aftermath of John Cale discovering his wife in bed with Kevin Ayers. Hence the paranoia, first hinted at in "Fear (Is A Man's Best Friend)" only increases in this album. "Slow Dazzle"'s most famous feature is its inclusion of a dark cover of Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" that evokes the pain of the lyrics in a way that the King never did. To quote David Bowie: "This isn't rock 'n' roll, this is genocide". Whilst the thundering lets-up to some extent in "Snow Patrol" and "I'm Not The Loving Kind", the paranoia never gives way and culminates in the frighteningly claustrophobic short-story "The Jeweller".

Island Records, I am to understand, enlisted Brian Eno and Philip Manzanera (both of Roxy Music) to play on "Fear" (which you have now listened to) in the hope that John Cale would return to the more artier and/or experimental rock music he made during his tenure in The Velvet Underground. One would imagine that they were not disappointed, as the music does take a turn that is more thoroughly explored in the following two albums ("Slow Dazzle" and "Helen Of Troy") that does not come to its conclusion until the live album "Sabotage/Live". On the other hand some of the songs ("Emily" in particular) appear to be lodged halfway between the songs of "Vintage Violence" and "Paris 1919".

That's why I recommended it as the starting point. If you favour the beauty of "Emily" and "Ship Of Fools" then I would suggest going backwards to "Paris 1919" and "Vintage Violence" as your next step. If you prefer the paranoia of "Fear (Is A Man's Best Friend)" or the experimental rock of "Gun" then "Slow Dazzle" and "Helen Of Troy" are the next logical step.

"Paris 1919" is, in many ways, even nicer than "Vintage Violence", but it is more rich and lush due to the presence of the strings section of the UCLA Symphony Orchestra and the 1/2 of the members of "Little Feat". Predominantly a charming and ethereal album, "Macbeth" hints at the type of songs that will be presented on following albums. "Paris 1919" is evocative of a deep nostalgia and, in particular, "Half Past France" is laced with a wistful sehnsucht.

"Vintage Violence" is more sort-of acoustic guitar-driven pop-rock. There's a little bit of Neil Young and the Byrds in there. One of the things about John Cale is that he was a classically-trained musician who became a rocker, rather than the other way round. Furthermore, whereas most rock/pop musicians who eventually make experimental/arty music start off with music that's more mundane (e.g. Radiohead's "Pablo Honey") and then learn which rules they can bend and break as their creative odyssey continues. John Cale, on the other hand, was already heavily involved in avant-garde music, even before he joined the Velvet Underground. Hence even when he tries to do a "back-to-basics" album like "Vintage Violence", there's always that avant-garde sense of the unnatural or disjointedness lurking just beneath the surface. It's probably his most straightforward album, but don't let that put you off: "Amsterdam" may be deceptively simple, but it is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Well I would certainly listen to "Vintage Violence", "Paris 1919", "Fear", "Slow Dazzle" and "Helen Of Troy" before giving up on trying to get into him. The first two are quite different to the following three (and to each other!) so I would be happy to give you an idea of what each of the five is like, but if I were to recommend just one I would probably say "Fear" as that is the only one that has a proper balance between Cale's wonderful ballads (e.g. "Ship of Fools") and his raucous art-rock (e.g. "Gun").
