“ You both listen to William Tyler, Steven Wilson and Bohren & der Club ….” that would be a hell of a collaboration.

Hell yes it would. Now that I think of it, it would be really interesting hearing a genuine collaboration between Tyler and Wilson. I wonder if Tyler would be able would be able to coax Wilson out of his shell enough to stop going through the motions like he currently is, force him to genuinely bring his A-game. I dunno. I guess I really need to sit with the new Wilson album, though. I've only heard it once or twice. What are your impressions of it so far?

I think it’s one of his best. It’s quickly becoming memorable to these ears and contains so much I felt lacking in some of his records leading up to it. He’s back.

Hey, thanks to that shout of yours at Entropia's page I've been listening to Krautwerk a lot lately and I'm really into it. So I figured I should try exploring more of krautrock and thought I'd ask you. Is there anything else you recommend from this genre?

I'd actually like to draw special attention to Caudal, because it's worth singling out - they're fucking awesome. Aidan Baker on guitar, loops, and wizardry, Felipe Salazar on drums, and Gareth Sweeny on bass (I'm pretty sure all three are part of Hypnodrone Ensemble, as well, in addition to Baker being behind Nadja, which is famous, I guess? Not familiar with their output). Anyway, I'd highly recommend Ascension and Slope/Land in addition to Fight Cry Fight. I think FCF is a bit more newbie friendly, but the compositions on Ascension and Slope/Land are just awesome, as long as they are. Ascension has some parts that sound almost industrial. And Baker is just an amazing guitarist, these songs are absolutely dripping with atmosphere. He's up there with Eno for me in terms of atmospherics.

Another band that introduced me to a lot of krautrock concepts was King Gizzard, btw. I see you're halfway there with Microtonal Banana. I would recommend giving Polygondwanaland a listen - I think it's their most accessible, yet outwardly weird album, and it has its foundations solidly laid in krautrock (and also Gabriel-era Genesis-like prog rock, imho, in the way the storytelling enfolds). On the other side of the coin, you have Nonagon Infinity, which is dense as fuck and kinda suffocating in just how much it throws at you. There's order in the madness, though, and once you figure that out you can hear homages to Neu!, recurring themes and riffs (sometimes from different albums), and just the way everything is laid out, it's like they wanted to dissect, yet pay homage to the krautrock genre.

For some reason lastfm never gave me a notification of your replies, so I'm only now seeing them. Wow, thank you so much for the detailed answer and all the recommendations! Truly appreciated, I'll definitely be checking them all out soon

I'd have to agree with you on Above the Arbor, it's a great tune with a stellar atmosphere. I must say I'm more familiar with Passerine than I am with Khol or Markhor, but I'm certainly making my way towards more of Smith's catalogue as we speak. He really is quite prolific, lots to listen to!

Sometimes I think I've seen it all, then I see someone with Ulaan Markhor in their top 10 albums. Great taste man, I'll have to check some more of of these out.
