The smartest people favor, if they have been sufficiently exposed to it and if they have musical talent, which is highly but not completely correlated with IQ -- the greatest music: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, etc. At the opposite extreme are rap* and R&B. The difference is in the intellectual and emotional sophistication of the music; if rap is addition, late Beethoven is differential geometry -- and I don't know, Bach is brane theory or something.

The musically astute mind hears and appreciates these complex patterns, for much the same reason that intelligent people are fond of complex puzzles -- because it can. (I should point out, though, that it's unusual for Bach to be this purely cerebral -- he was a master of emotion, as well.)
