No right or wrong answer to the following question, but: what are your thoughts on Mogwai? I think their discography is so broad that there’s never really a dull answer to that question… especially from any longtime fans who’ve stuck with them over the years. I know they’re currently the most played artist for each of us, so I’d love to hear your input.

I'll always have a soft spot for Mogwai as they got me into post rock as a teenager, although I can admit now that (especially recently) they have some really quite weak releases - the last three, for example, may have one great album of music between them but there's so much filler which I don't find that engaging. That being said, their run of albums and EPs up to Rock Action/My Father My King is unrivalled . Unlike later, each has its own unique character which is conveyed so effectively, and I love hearing their progression over those first few years.

Yeah, early Mogwai really is in a league of its own. I think they were maybe even a bit ahead of their time... or maybe that specific era of their sound has just become more and more relevant to my tastes as I've gotten older. I loved that kind of noisy, bleak, pseudo-slowcore sound from those early EPs. Just like you said, their run through MFMK was gold. Maybe it's campy to say (write) aloud, but I can listen to those records today and feel like it's all just 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 music. Whatever that may mean. I think my first listen of CODY, especially, is seared into my memory for life. // The run following MFMK is still really good music in my books. I remember "clicking" with RA through HWNDBYW pretty hard, in like... 2014 or so. 𝘙𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘴 is really unique and respectable in that it was the first real push of their comfort zone, for sure. I favor their guitars over synths so I think it's still kinda' my least favorite of their LPs to date, but I don't hate it.

I think I find enough enjoyment in their last 3 albums, which is where our opinions may deviate a smidge. I'm not enamored with them by any means, and it's accurate to say that it takes 3 modern Mogwai records to find enough material that can hang with YT or CODY, as a full LP. No disagreement there. I've been [and foresee myself] returning to the newer stuff periodically, maybe once or twice a year since release. They're solid, but there's no debating that they're just not even in the same league as that '97-'01 streak. (But also, realistically, tapping into the headspace and circumstances to write something in the vein of what you did 25+ years ago is a pretty tall order. As an artist, I wouldn't want to do that.) Just makes those earlier records all the more special to me. I binged post-rock pretty hard in my 20s and listen to it considerably less often now, but Mog's catalog is so expansive that I can reliably find myself in the mood to hear something from them, most days.
