And our friends and relatives are not all the same gender, I think I should take it upon myself to understand and possibly analyse how the differences between black men and black women affect the way that we see each other, because for sure there a lot of things up for debate. Nice list. Now, the Archandroid really makes sense. I remember last time I listened to it, enjoying the styles on the album a lot, and just feeling it was a technically great piece of work, but in terms of personal connection I felt quite detached from it. And so I need to listen to it again and determine why exactly that is. And while we're still on the subject of R&B - how do you like 'A Letter to Myself' by the Chi-Lites? Feel like it's something you possible really like. I've never done that, as in meet/ linked up with anyone off last.fm solely off of musical interests or going to the same show. It doesn't sound so bad. Have you done it? Sounds like your thing.

But amongst the discussion of race relations with others, the community itself tends to overlook gender relations. It's like, the relationship between the genders while still being black, because some individuals can make it a black man or a black woman thing, depending on what attention or what benefits they can get with that and I think sometimes they are lacking the opposite perspective. It can get divisive. But that's not to say a lot of people do not already have perspective -- I believe women started a lot of the marches over in the US so that lets you know things are on the right track. But yeah, gender relations between black people; I believe that's a work in progress - some understanding things better than others. There are loads of really interesting discussions on more specific aspects of gender relations I've read on the internet however I doubt ktt is mature enough for that, although I know there is a black empowerment thread on there.

About the black empowerment organizations - sounds really good! Have you been to any yet or something you are still planning to do? I've met some likeminded people who are part of these things -- a society I'm in (for the black students), as well as we did our own Ferguson protest on campus. So I kind of know how it feels to surround yourself with those kinds of people, it's really nice in comparison to the whole troll nature of the internet, like on KTT for example, where people just really don't care to discuss it in a serious manner. As of recent, I was watching a video called 'Being a Black Man', idk if you want me to send you the link, if so just let me know. And of course, I'm not a black man.

Hmmm, this year wasn't too eventful for me with R&B if I'm honest with the obvious exception of the king and LP1, which the more I listen to sways a little more towards the electronic lane. But I'll say: OFFICIAL ART AGE Love Apparatus Timeshare EP Iman Omari's EP Samadhi No More EP Maybe Kelis' FOOD if you are into her voice The Fatima album was cool Bad Etudes are all pretty enjoyable at the least. But I can't say I was really that impressed. I know you complain about Alt R&B lol, well that's what most of the shit was this year. I loooooooooove Nick Hakim and both of his EP's though.

So, is NA pt 1 your favourite from her? And if you had to pick a group of female albums like we did BM etc, you think you could? I don't necessarily mean politically/socially charged albums but just albums in the genre you think go really well together? Yeah, not too many of my friends are fans like THAT either, its kind of annoying. I figured I have to make some friends who are heavy music lovers for them to appreciate that thing. Luckily I have a friend who happens to love D that I'm going with (lol @ happens to love D) but yeah you know what I mean. I hope you continue to be a mediator and keep that thread under control lol. Nice to see your job is still going well, I'm really happy for you. I imagine you want to get a CS internship soon or something?

I like that you're getting people to listen, my mother actually has always liked his music but she doesn't keep up with new music releases. I did buy it for her to play in her car lol. I know I'll most definitely enjoy hearing it live, if D comes to your city, I think you should take your mother haha. And thank you for that, Franco. Same goes for you, although I feel as though you are in a good place for the most part. You're still tutoring and stuff right? If so, keep it up. You sound happy. I miss talking to y'all too lol, there is just so much humour and amazing opinions you guys have to offer. I hope I can get back on there soon, whenever I see fit for me but I do miss talking to you guys a lot.

There have been far too many musical artists who have been afraid to lay out their feelings regarding the racial tensions. It's all very much like they don't want to step on toes, or bite hands. Which is sad. I don't believe any other R&B album of this decade is in its calibre for that reason. How D was able to pull that off (I even read that he 'rushed' this out) is very endearing.

I definitely agree with you on the album being a classic. It is essentially like anything else that is deemed iconic - a significant marker for a certain era or event in history, a manifestation of a moment that took place in the past. It's a manifestation of the reflection taking place now, so yes. Instant classic is very fitting. I have this thing. I believe there are some albums which belong in 'families' with other albums lol, it's really funny. So, anyway I would have to say BM is the baby in a circle with There's A Riot Going On, What's Going On, Innervisions, SOTT (an argument CAN be made for Songs In The Key but Inne visions is the most perfect fit). I feel like those albums are all really kindred spirits. They all set out to do the same things, but the slight differences in age allow them to diverge in some ways.

which reflect so well on the most recent events over there in America. So it brings a new sense of darkness to the surface. Reflection on where we are headed following those events. I think time/transcience - past, present, future is a recurrent theme but I need to give this thang more listens to confirm that. It's so beautifully written though! I'll be going to D's show in February, as will Playa so we'll probably get even a newer sense of appreciation for it when we hear it live. I'm trying not to compare it Voodoo too much, because like I mentioned it's a step outwards in tone from BS and Voodoo. At least to me. Tell me how you feel about it, I'd love to hear your thoughts too! As for me, I'm doing pretty well. School in particular is going well, there is still some personal stuff I am dealing with but it's nothing I can't handle. Nothing bad lasts forever. Hope y'all on the other side (KTT lol) are all well and happy.

Hey, Frankie how are you? Black Messiah is really incredible to me. I think a lot has to do with the timing of the record and when it came out; not far from the racial tension that has been brewing. The album as a whole is by far the most dark and self aware he's ever been. But aside from that, the record is just extremely strong. A testament to this is how much my favourite tracks have changed. When it first got released, my favourites were Really Love, Prayer, Betray My Heart, Back To The Future #1, and now in this moment they are 1000 Deaths, The Charade, Ain't That Easy, Till It's Done and Another Life. Another Life especially reminds me of the ethereal vibe that Voodoo has going on. And I told Playa there are certain songs on there I feel like could have been on Voodoo, but as for the conscious and dark songs, they are way too different in contrast. Prayer is especially haunting in the way it sounds, the bell, the guitar, but then you have songs like The Charade and Till It's Done

Death's album Human would be a good starting point. That was the first dm album that I've heard and I still enjoy it.

There were a lot of gimmicks back in those days. If one thing was successful, another label would be quick to answer that with a knock-off of their own to see if they could cash in off that same appeal. Berry Gordy did stuff like that. Anyway, the case of Altyrone Brown is worth noting because how absolutely terrible he is. lol... All this was a great find though. Thanks for putting me on to it. It lead me to finding some more interesting music... Hope you don't mind all this writing.

The version of the Eccentric Soul: The Bandit Label album on Spotify has 3 discs and 36 tracks in all, and there's this one song called "Ladies & Wonderful Girls" by the Majestic Arrows which I found to be a stand out. It has a neat spacey synth and funky bassline going on throughout it. There's some other artists on the compilation, like this one group called The Arrows (maybe an early reincarnation of the Majestic Arrows) and a song they did called "We Have Love" which has some really passionate vocals. According to what I read, the guy who started the label was named Arrow Brown and he had his son, Altyrone Deno Brown, do a couple songs for the label because he wanted to make money doing a similar thing to what the Jackson 5 were doing. I like learning about shit like this, the decisions which go into record labels putting out certain singles or whatever.
