Howdy! Back in the early 1900s when the US Government started licensing radio stations, they started with "K**" west of the Mississippi River and "W**" east of the Mississippi with 3 or 4 letter afterward. Sometimes the owners picked acronyms like 1924's WGN--World's Greatest Newspaper, for the Chicago Tribune newspaper whose owners started the radio station and later TV station . The community activists who started KRFC in Colorado picked the letters generally for Community Radio Fort Collins. We quickly grew out of just the one city and they became Community Radio for the Front Range (but kept the letters).

As long as there are people who will hire us to help improve their communities we'll have work. We work with villages and cities, some larger areas, to plan to attract and create new jobs and new housing, as well as parks and roads and new energy production they need. Sometimes we help create new Arts venues for music and such. Never a dull moment.

I lead nineteen groups myself and if I filtered posts, I would certainly have reserved the right to omit that one... it was a scattershot, and a one-time event at that. It might warm your heart as a member of the opposition that it was posted by about 500 of the 809 groups I sent it to, and has to date resulted in zero donations! I try not to mix my worlds in that particular way under most circumstances... At any rate, I'm 100% supportive of your right and duty to keep it about the music and to preserve the character of your group!

My favorite Swedish poet Dan Andersson was sent to Minnesota at age 14 by his father, in 1902, to see if the family could join him later, but he wrote back home saying there were no better opportunities for them there than in Sweden and was asked to come home. He later wrote a novel called Chi-mo-ka-ma, published in 1920 - the same year he died from cyanide poisoning, about his experiences in Minnesota. It’s a real shame that novel hasn’t been translated into English, because it’s such a great account of the hardships of early immigrant life and full of colorful characters, and his descriptions of Minnesota’s wilderness are just magical! I'm real glad he didn’t emigrate, because I wouldn’t want to live without his poetry inspired by his later life in Dalecarlia (the language in his poems is so incredibly beautiful that I feel it’s the main reason why I’m grateful I speak Swedish, many Swedish folk singers have [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVWIh44uK7w]sung his words[/url]).

Thank you for the kind welcome! I like your charts! Oh, that’s cool about your great-grandmother! Did she go to Minnesota? My great-grandfather who was from the countryside outside of Malmö emigrated to Oregon in the early 1900's (I went there this summer actually, to see some of the places he had seen, got ME thinking about emigrating…) and worked as a lumberjack, but then he got lucky, we think maybe he went to Nome and found gold, and returned to Malmö with a nice gold watch that he had had made and some other precious items and bought a car and started the city's first taxi company. He went from working class to upper class. Most people weren't so lucky...
