Saw this band play at a show last night in Portland, thought you might like them. Check them out if you want to hear some sick instrumental math rock. https://www.last.fm/music/CoVet Maybe one of these Spotify URLs will link you to their page. Otherwise just search for them. https://open.spotify.com/artist/46iJ1VD4HKFnqjISGqlZkV?si=eW7YO-q-TDOBhkw4gzVJOg spotify:artist:46iJ1VD4HKFnqjISGqlZkV

Also interested in your opinion of the newest Portugal. The Man album. In between last.fm's incarnations, I've become a huge fan of the band. Really liked Evil Friends but Woodstock...idk man. They've always flirted with pop sensibilities to some extent especially mid to late period but I feel they've gone full on pop and it's not sitting particularly well with me. So many good albums, will it be a one off or are they going in this direction? Don't know... you might have a totally different perspective. That's all. Peace.

Elder is awesome, truly. Every album. Def good stuff! Sounds like we might get new Baptisits in the spring, looking forward to that. Keep forgetting Quicksand, heard some really good things. I didn't get into them until they took a break or whatever happened. And finally I see Eula on your top tracks. I'm DYING to hear what Baroness sounds like without Pete. I was genuinlely gutted when I heard he left dude, he was my favorite member of Baroness...at least in a live setting. Seems like they were really back in a groove LOVED Purple (almost too short) and then Peter leaves?! Guess we shall see... Later man!

The Dead Cross album makes me wish he had done something else with Dillinger(RIP). Still could do something with Ben Weinman I guess. Interested on your take on Emperor of Sand. Sonically it's great. One of the best sounding Mastodon albums. Brent's lead work is fantastic. And I love Jaguar God. Have a soft spot for Toe to Toes off the EP. But if I'm honest, it's kinda been diminishing returns since Blood Mountain, imo they're last perfect album. Some people love Crack the Skye. I certainly don't dislike it. But if I don't listen to Oblivion or Divinations I usually listen to the whole album as a separate entity. I know they'll never put out another Leviathan and that's ok, I've enjoyed the journey. I just don't wanna lose them like Opeth, lets say, who I'll always respect but no longer anticipate their new albums. No where near that yet w/Mastodon but you never no. Speaking of Savannah bands, can't tell you how bummed I am about Kylesa's Breakup/Hiatus...

That Dead Cross album is great, gotta revisit it. Spent a lot of time listening to it over the summer then kinda lost track of it in search of other things. The way Patton described it had me worried, he can be kind of pretentious, but he brings it big time on that album. I'm a massive Faith No More fan and their reunion album left me somewhat disappointed. It wasn't varied enough imho, no Collision, Caffeine, Get Out, RV, Crack Hitler...nothing wacky and heavy. No instant hits you can't get out of your head like Land of Sunshine, Small Victory, Last Cup of Sorrow, Ashes to Ashes... Just my 2 cents, but it was worth it to see them live again. Seems like another Fantomas album is out of the question, last one was over ten years ago.

Not feeling the new layout, miss my old page, the forums. This place is a ghost town. Such a bummer 2009-2013 or so this place was so much fun. Guess that's life, nothing stays the same. Cheers man! Hope your well. And if you've got any hidden gems to rec don't hesitate. Later.

I kinda feel as I'm getting older I'm getting stoked for albums only to find myself somewhat underwhelmed... Could just be my state of mind currently idk. Mastodon, Meshuggah, Neurosis, Devin Townsend...bands that contain desert island type material...all disturbingly left me with a slight meh feeling. Off the top of my head Nails and Mutoid Man exceeded expectations. There's some good stuff out there just not the kind that blew my mind just a few years ago. Enslaved, Godflesh, Rosetta, Amenra, Electric Wizard, Unsane... Some of my favorite bands ever left me feeling I was missing something. Still on the fence with new Mogwai.

Wassup man? Been a while...I'll say, years dude. A lot of that is me, I kinda dropped of the grip for a myriad of reasons. As for how I'm doing, let's just say I hope you're doing better than I am, lol. Anyway Converge... I really dig TDiU. Caught them live twice this year. Once pre-album, once post. This last time they opened with Reptilian which was totally out of left field, but killer. Figured they would close show with it but closed with Concubine?! Otherwise only played I Can Tell You About Pain, Under Duress, Reptilian and Eve from the single which crushed live. Post Jane Doe... I put it after Axe to Fall, AWLWLB, and You Fail Me, probably just ahead of No Heroes. Just didn't quite have the immediate impact of the others, for me. But I like it, def like it. Esp A Single Tear, Under Duress, Trigger, Broken By Light. How bout you?

I was not a fan, I genuinely did like the tracks that were released beforehand (even Show Yourself) but listening to the album as a whole was pretty tedious. It felt so uninspired to me. I'll stick with their earlier stuff, I think.

AND HOLY SHIT, i didn't realise Intronaut are releasing an album this year too until your post! WOW. I just listened to Fast Worms... the death vocals are back! really jazzy breakdowns... wow even the artwork hails back to Prehistoricisms... I actually can't handle this much great stuff in one year... too little time to listen to it all. I just want to listen to everything all the time! Oh, and i just saw Baroness have a new album this year, because why the fuck not throw that in there too. Killer.

The new look i don't mind so much as all that's missing. You can still get to your journal -http://www.last.fm/user/irishtim/journal but they've basically removed it, who knows if they'll bring back in time for people to do the year end lists. They've kinda killed off the community aspect. This year has been amazing (for me anyway) i've been really enjoying occult/70s/Sabbath retro throwback bands immensely. Obviously Ghost, but new releases by Kadavar, Graveyard, Uncle Acid, Year of the Goat, Orchid, The Sword, Demon Head, Freedom Hawk, Goatsnake, Ruby the Hatchet, Royal Thunder....and the Elder album is like Kyuss/Led Zeppelin had a baby. Black Breath, Mutoid Man and Kylesa are also top notch, the new Deafheaven is ok, I even liked the new Faith No More album... add to that a bunch of metal/doom stuff and i'm almost overwhelmed. I agree about Torche, is wasn't quite up to par with their past stuff.

he there, Tim, i really miss the good ol' last.fm. as far as anything new that i've been spinning, well, hardly... so i've been indulging in back catalogues of Paradise Lost, Amorphis, Metallica and Behemoth, and occasional stints with hip-hop here and there... oh, and after i've read 'kill me, please' about the beginning of punk music, i checked The Stooges and The Velvet Underground... enjoyed the former quite some, and found the latter to be rather folksy... what about you? anything new and exciting? anything worth checking out? i totally fell out of checking new releases, no time since our son was born last September.

Hey man been a while! With the new site upgrade thought i'd drop by see what's good, what you liking this year? I'm finding 2015 to be really great, seems like every week there's a new album that I become obsessed with. Mutoid Man is top 5 for sure!

Great taste man, what are those albums in the column "what I've been listening to lately"? I'd like to check some of those, cause it is very probably super similar to my favourites.

hey! thanks for the comment... my year was HEAVILY ruled by doom/sludge/metal... i put that down to not really having any decent blogs/websites to find new stuff in other genres.. and having less time to search for it. so i basically only heard new releases from bands i already knew, anything else was an accident. just getting a hold of things i'm reading on lists now. any recc's for me?

Thanks for the recommend, I will definitely give them a try. Out of mine - I can name three, but only one of them came out in 2014. It was Animals as Leaders - The Joy of Motion. Rips me to pieces every time :) And the other two are Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind, and Protest the Hero - Volition.

I've been listening to a lot of grindcore and crust actually. Young and in the Way's newest is one of this years highlights. In that vein, I've been listening to Torch Runner, Homewrecker, Full of Hell's collaboration with Merzbow, Svffer, Hierophant, Obliterations, and Cult Leader (RIP Gaza). Which brings us to Trap Them. I originally was less than thrilled with Blissfucker but it surprisingly is growing on me of late. The new United Nations rips pretty hard (Ben Koller is the man!) What else? Love Thou, latest album Heathen rules and EP The Sacrifice. Their collaboration with The Body is quite good. Speaking of collaborations Scott Walker & Sunn O))) is much better than expected. Some pretty impressive post-rock releases of late as well, new ones from This Will Destroy You, Mono, and Jacob. Hadn't heard about any of them so they were all pleasant surprises. Oh, I really dig the newest Agalloch...been a fan of them from the Pale Folklore days, but kind of lost track.

Sleepwalking Sailors is good stuff. HA seems to be getting better and better. Picked that up around the same time as Once More 'Round The Sun. I'm still listening to that one but as far as Mastodon albums go the last couple have had less staying power for me. Part of that maybe the fact that I haven't seen them live in a while, so I haven't digested the newer tracks in a live setting. New Melvins with dudes from Butthole Surfers is sweet. Been digging new ones from Giant Squid, YOB, and Pallbearer. The new Electric Wizard ain't bad, enjoyable, but a long way from Dopethrone for me. New Code Orange (Kids) is pretty good, much more mature. Liking Today is the Day's newest but I'm kind of a Steve Austin devotee. Also really enjoying the Godflesh reunion album, one of my favorite bands of all time. Won't get into At the Gates, still processing the new opus. Slaughter of the Soul is one of my all time fave albums and I need more time with the comeback.

I've got Bloodmines, and I'm afraid it falls into the underwhelming category for me. I love me some Baptists. Bushcraft is one of my favorite albums of the last couple years, and the Good Parenting EP rips too. I was anticipating the new one in a big way...spent a lot of time with it and I just can't get excited about it. Heard a couple tracks from Generation of Vipers and looking forward to hearing the whole thing. Sounds really good, picking up from where Howl and Filth left off! Gonna get on that one for sure. The year hasn't been all disappointment, def some strong stuff around and a few pleasant surprises. Waiting on the new Old Man Gloom, hoping that salvages some of 2014 a bit. You got any hot recommendations, holla, cause I could use some. If you have some insight into the upsides of Bloodmines, I'd love to hear 'em. Later man!

What's up dude? Been ages. Hope all's well, and you had a good summer... I've been MIA I'm afraid, in general, not just last.fm. As a result I'm a bit out of the loop musically, starting to catch up though. As I am, I'm realizing what a down year it is for heavy music...imho. You know me, I'm not a Negative Nancy, but I'm feeling very...underwhelmed by this years releases man. Kinda bummed really. Maybe it's just me.

I'm liking the new Helms Alee, Every Time I Die,and t new Mastodon is cool, my favorite from them probably being Blood Mountain. I want to check out new Architects, Animals as Leaders, Agalloch (check out their older albums if you havent, vocals are borderline too-blackish for me but Ashes Against the Grain is just awesome), Trap Them, Cynic. Also Killer Be Killed feat Greg Puciato, Max Cavalera and Troy Sanders is a cool, interesting listen too, the good outweighing the bad....send any solid rec's my way!

Not too much I'm super stoked on in 2014...Then again, I too have found it hard to dig up worthwhile new stuff due to lack of free time. Just stumbled on this UK guy via some blog, he does some cool electronic stuff: http://adamfielding.bandcamp.com/ A recent bummer, the blog Elementary Revolt recently called it quits. That was a gem for undiscovered music, sad to see them go...
