I feel the same, if not a little more pessimistic. Although I liked the first half of The Astonishing, they haven't really WOWed me in a while. They feel tired and uninspired, like they're on autopilot. I'm giving it a fair shake because they were my favorite band for ten years, but it doesn't hold a candle to Octavarium or Train of Thought, to say nothing of their master works.

I see you like Anathema. Go and listen [right now] to "Ocean Without a Shore" by Weather Systems. It's Danny's newest release and it's basically a continuation of 2012-era Anathema.

I've never heard Big Big Train, but I've been loving Nick D'Virgilio's collaboration with Neal Morse and Ross Jennings. Where should I start with BBT? Their catalog looks intimidating.

Hey man, I got hooked up BBT with The Underfall Yard album. It was their first with Nick D'Virgilio as well as vocalist David Longdon (RIP). In my opinion all of the albums after the Underfall Yard are worthy listens however their most recent Welcome To The Planet rates nearly as high. Hope that helps to soften some of the intimidation!

Given how much you like Evergrey, you might like the album Epitaph by Pyramaze. It gives me a lot of the dark, prog-power vibes that Evergrey is known for, but better executed (IMHO).
