Clandestine Blaze. Hard question indeed, but that comes to mind when thinking about projects as solid and creative as Horna. Their finnish counterparts also lead towards glorious honor; think about Noenum, Sielunvihollinen, Satanic Warmaster, and (of course) Sargeist. Bands of today which I also like include Endlichkeit, Black Cillice, Lamp of Murmuur, Kult ofenzivy, Demoncy, Holocausto, Goatpenis (R.I.P.) and others...

It may be because they usually don't play their songs live (after all, most don't have that playful vibe which other TON songs carry), or something, but there are countless people, including myself, who consider its epitome and masterpiece. Specially after an album like OR, and something as heterogeneouss as BK. According to MA, it "(...) peaked at #39 on the Billboard 200". As for myself, hadn't I have music like this to make company to my personal woe, I wouldn't have survived last year I fanthom. That's just me, but a lot of fans can relate to it. Also it might be their most "sincere" album, after Dead Again (recorderd in totally different circumstances). But that's it, I'm drunk, so I talk to much, thank you for your comment.

Thank you, friend. Well, maybe not all those whose name shall I utter might be considered underground within the PE/Noise scene, but some which automatically come to mind are Death Squad, Striations, Salakapakka Sound System, Zyklon SS, Contrastate, Torba, Strict, Stimbox, Cov Ops, Pedestrian Deposit, Institut, M.I.A., Menacing '84, Interracial Sex, Young Hustlers, Herukrat, Heinz Hopf, Eric Lunde... and many more. Hope you like some of these. Also check out Zob Zygglan. I don't know who he is, but he does make some good noise.

Jef's demos under that moniker are very interesting, but the full length is something spectacular

Edgar Varèse's "Poème électronique" and Stockhausen's "Kontakte". Huge influences for Industrial music. For more Industrial-leaning artists check out Keimverbreitung, Meatpacker, Am Not, Laureate, Linekraft, Detonation Day, Haus Arafna, Club Moral, Survival Unit, Vivenza, and IRM. Some of them projects are quite well known, but that's what comes to mind.

Well if we're looking for aggression and intensity of sound in a manner oposed to a more brooding, atmospheric approach of Industrial/PE projects like BDN and GO and the like, I guess some releases from the 80's match the passionate, larger-than-life aural violence of early WH. The split collaborations, early Ramleh (by that I point to their pre-Hole in the Heart 'demos'), The Sodality, almost everything of Con-dom, and some Mauthausen Orchestra. That's pretty much what I can think of.

BUT, since your question probably aims at modern projects that manage to be as loud and unrelenting, look no further than the quantity of good quality PE that's been made for the past 20 years. Strict's "Kiss" is one of the most gut-wrenching releases I've come accross. Other modern artists who I believe to have achieved similar intensity, regardless of how closer their music is to Whitehouse, are Mademoiselle Bistouri, Sick Seed, Kevlar, Menancing '84, Koufar, Herukrat, North Central, Grunt (which keeps getting better), Control, Wertham, Caligula031, S.T.A.B. Electronics, Expensive Tastes, Striations, Wonderland Club, Striations, Institut... and many more. Bizarre Uproar's "Rape Africa" comes to mind. And I'm not even talking about SJ/Sutcliffe No More, whose unbridled creativity spawned releases that expand lyrically the dark literature of Whitehouse in ways that never cease to amaze me. Both lyrically and sound-wise.

Not to mention classics like Slogun, Deathpile & Whorebutcher. I don't know much of the first ("Kill to Forget" is mandatory), but these last two really bought PE to another level. GR is canonized, but the compilations and smaller releases are also great. Prurient stands almost outside of Noise/PE due to its musical volatility, but the first four full-lengths do the job quite well. "Military Road" comes to mind. And so does Taint, but its music is dirtier and expansive than Whitehouse, as would be a harsh noise-oriented project, whilst maintaning the PE paraphernalia that makes its music so unforgettable.

I couldn't point only specifically to Death Industrial, even though the genre overlaps with Power Electronics - take Whitehouse's Dedicated do Peter Kürten. Absolute masterpiece. Short songs with powerful, abrasive vocals over minimalist feedback worship and loops. Definitely reminds me of Atrax Morgue. But then, there are his (Marco's) obvious influences: Brighter Death Now, Maurizio Bianchi, Mauthausen Orchestra, and other projects with a general darker atmosphere that come to mind, such as Genocide Organ, Anenzenphalia, Karl Runau, and maybe some Esplendor Geométrico..?

Sorry for the late reply, don't know why my earlier answer wasn't saved on the server (presumably because there was a problem with it last night), but anyway, I haven't listened to much DoF at all. Reduced to Ashes has some pretty good riffs, the kind of you would hear from Incantation or Immolation. Both bands whose evil atmosphere seeps from their style of riffing, which I personally consider to be the quintenssensial Death Metal riff. From my memory it somewhat alternates between that and Suffocation-inspired chugs. Inbreeding the Anthropofagi has an atmosphere so thick and dense that it reminds me of Disembowelment. Other than that, MA lists bands such as Defeated Sanity, Disgorge, Decrepit Birth, and Dying Fetus as related, which I think is just.

Last fm was cranky last night, yeah. I really like the style of death metal from deeds of flesh and deicide. I used to listen to cryptopsy too.

I was reading the lyrics to the long defeat on metal archives for the last couple days and wow they really outdid themselves in terms of writing on that album. I almost wish they had a separate record where they just read out the lyrics cause their like poetry in a way. Dark twisted poetry.

Yes, I mean, when it comes to Metal bands with very good lyrics, not just well written or merely profound, but lyrics which one would come back to reading even without music, very few bands come to mind. When it comes to proper lyrics, DsO always outstands everyone else, with texts that feel as if their meaning lies beyond the words itself and might be conceived as a whole with the music to be understood... I think there is actually a story or some sort of in the booklet of TLD accompaining the actual lyrics. Read on a last.fm comment once something indicating that.

Even though he was a prodigy it’s clear he developed his intellect and worldview over time. So that reassures me a big, i used to be a bit insecure about my intelligence (and still sometimes am) but I remind myself I still have time to grow and I’m not going to be on the level he’s at right away. Intellectualism is like a mountain, some people start out more advantaged than others, sure, but everyone still has to put in the effort and work to climb it if they really want to engage with the ideas. No one becomes a genius immediately or without struggle.

It’s the same thing with music taste, I didn’t start out listening to Deathspell Omega or other kinds of experimental and extreme music, I had to develop my taste over time, and eventually I was able to appreciate and even love those kinds of music (I think DsO said something similar in one of their interviews, that taste is like a muscle you have to develop). With Hasjarl, I noticed that he mainly mentioned metal bands in that first interview (although all very good ones) whereas in the Bardo Mythology interview he cited a much more diverse range of influences, so his taste surely blossomed over time too. Even though it’s very different from the later ones, you can still feel the passion that Hasjarl had for the music, and that hasn’t changed a bit to the present. DsO really is a labor of love in every way, with their dedication to making every aspect as good as it can be is “taken to the extreme limit”, as they say.

I’ve been reading a bit of Bataille and Nietzsche, and it’s shined a bit of light on the lyrics (the book your looking for is Bataille’s the Inner Experience, btw). I’m still working on Nietzsche, I really like some of his ideas, and I find Bataille really interesting. I still have a long way to go though, and I want to take my time to really understand it instead of just rushing through it so I can claim I’m “smart”. I’m just glad I’m reading at all, not to get too personal but I was really depressed and struggled with mental health for a long time, and it made it hard for me to think clearly. I’m doing better now, I’m trying to “tread the path of solar solitude”, and that approach has helped me. Anyway, take you time to respond, or don’t at all, I’m not super active either anymore so I understand it.
