Okay. Interesting. I have mixed many genres in my profile. I have been a member since 2012, but for a long time I only listened to metal to a lesser extent. I am 46 years old and was a huge metalhead in the 90s. But I lost touch with the genre during the 00s and the 10s. But now I am redescovering the genre and also discovering a lot of artists that was unknown for me even though they have been active for 15-20 years. I never used to listen to anything without clean vocals before except for maybe some melodic death. I never listened to metalcore or sludge or post before for instance. Those are completly new subgenres to me.

For me it was almost the exact opposite way. For years and years all I heard was death metal and black metal with all sorts of harsh vocals. Anything else would've been deemed unworthy by me during that 'phase' which spanned roughly from the mid 2000s to mid 2010s. I still listen to that kind of metal but rarely and that too only the familiar albums/songs. I'm not much into metalcore but sludge and post-metal do intrigue me quite a bit and I've heard some of the bands of those genres but not a lot.

'The Ocean' is a great progressive post metal band with mixed vocals and a lot of sludge influences. Probably my favorite band in that genre. I can recommend it. All of their albums sound very different from each other. Yeah. I mean I am just discovering black and death metal. I am not really into classic death metal, but progressive death metal intruiges me, as well progressive death core. Quite small subgenres, but very interesting.

I quite like The Ocean. Their last album was one of the best of 2023, but I need to explore their discography further. I was much more into death metal than black metal btw, and I really liked Old School death metal too. The ease and simplicity of OSDM made it very appealing to me, although sometimes it tends to get a bit monotonous; I developed a taste for it much later after getting into extreme metal. Truthfully I don't like deathcore almost at all, every band of that genre I've heard so far has been met with a big no no by my ears.

What is thall? Great that you've found music that you're so passionate about. But I'm just not into metalcore/deathcore, and in general not seeking any kind of extreme sort of music presently. Have you got any prog recommendations (rock mostly) that I might not have heard of already?

I am not that much into normal rock/metal lately except Leprous. I listen to more like pop if I get tired of metal, mostly pop in spanish. But I will give you a few suggestions: I like the band Aisles. They do kind of melancholic progressive rock and also Kingcrow, straightforward progressive rock. Also you could try Freak Kitchen from Sweden. Cool humourus rock, quite straightforward. Thall is another word for heavy djent basically. One of the most obvious bands in the thall genre is Vildhjarta from Sweden. I consider it a subgenre of deathcore in my opinion. Me, I usually like music that really goes nuts and pushes everything to the extreme, in any way. If I want something comfortable, I usually listen to some music in other languages then English, such as Spanish or Turkish pop/rock.

I like Leprous a lot; need to get back to exploring their discog thoroughly. I've been listening to art rock kind of stuff so much lately that I don't feel the need to go for soft music, but during my extreme metalhead phase I did need to do that sometimes, just like you now. I like Kingcrow a lot! How do you like their latest album? I heard so many other 2024 releases but couldn't get to that one much; need to correct that. I feel you can't call djent a subgenre of deathcore as those are two very different sounding genres. I might be categorically wrong though, idk. Are you from Spain or a dominantly Spanish speaking nation?

Whoa. So, you followed me back during my last.fm hiatus; I saw your reply to that kid in the Porcupine Tree shoutbox, thought "wow what a based, buckethead loving guy this is, he must have a great taste in music". Lo and behold, here we are, while I listen through PT's Fear of a Blank Planet, perusing your library, following you back, and recommending you Steven Wilson's side project No-Man. Particularly the songs "Angeldust" and "Simple". Also Big Big Train's "Lost Rivers of London". Have a good one 👍

Hey yea, guess I followed you quite a while back. I keep frequenting the PT page, among many others and leave comments, mingling with fellow fans. Love Buckethead! What a musician with such a vast ocean of incredible output. What are your favourite albums of his? And I've known about No-Man for a long time now, just haven't been able to check out their whole back-catalogue, which is why those songs seem unfamiliar. Big Big Train is relatively new to me. Thanks for those recommendations! What are your favourite PT, No-Man and BBT albums?

Thanks for the comment. You have cool charts as well, I see some stuff we have in common, the prog stuff - you should get more Tangerine Dream stuff, I recommend the albums: Rubycon, Force Majeure, and Tangram. Some of their classic 70s albums that you haven't listened to, I Do like their 80s as well, but yeah they have tons of albums from all eras, so it's kind of a hit or miss, but their 70s is my favorite era.

I'll be checking out lots of Tangerine Dream soon. There's so much good music new and old to explore but not enough time. Tragic for me.

yea no worries. I also think ''Space Ritual'' is the one that they manage to surpass the studio recordings, one of those rare occurrences.

Add Killing Technology and Target Earth to that list and you'll get a fair idea of what I like. Angel Rat and Outer Limits are their most accessible albums but still very enjoyable. Very influential band! Was on vacation the last few days so couldn't respond on time, apologies.

That's something to fly inter continental to watch shows. I thought America had enough good shows all the time, even though you might not get a lot of them in your particular area. Yea I'd heard about Gorod coming to India but then again they must've been supposed to play far far away.

I'm fairly fussy with bands in that genre so it's down to a few bands standing out. Thrash was what started me on metal so it'll always be a favourite of mine even thought nowadays i'm more interested in technical and progressive stuff. The thrash bands you've listed I know well too but only the classic era roughly up the early 90s, never really bothered with many albums after that. As I got older I found the more tech and 'out there' thrash bands which I guess turned me onto the modern tech stuff. Recommendation wise, definitely check out the new album from Slugdge if you haven't already, great mix of stuff going on!

I still write about music on my blog, of course, but not for work unfortunately. I can't really share the architecture site since it's part of our NDA, sorry :/ I'll try to find one from another client though soon; there are far more fun things I've done. So your knees just started giving out? I know mine don't work very well, which is why I bike everywhere; I'm terrible with running or anything impactful on the knees.

Haha :p I study multimedia things (I want to be a web developer) and I'm currently learning programming by myself so that I'll pass the exam for the school I want (it's the end of my diploma but as I don't want to work yet I look for schools and one of them will ask me questions about programming and I have to know the answer otherwise I'd be very sad :p )

Their first three albums are very "savage", like they're gonna rip off the flesh of the listeners! The comes their fourth album, Killing Technology which I love most, and then they have three more albums very proggy and less thrashy, good but not as their previous ones. For Vektor, they only have two albums, and Cosmic Cortex is their best (listen to the song Tetrastructural Minds)

Well the quality isn't best and as a guitarist I played better during rehearsals (we had 1 month to learn 5 songs). Well anyway I'm glad that you ask for it, you can even scrobble it :p https://www.dropbox.com/s/qyt4i067y6264r5/2015%20-%20Live%20From%20The%20Vault.rar?dl=0 And I see you like Voivod which is a band that inspire me when composing! Do you know the band Vektor ?
