I hope things start going better for you bud. You been listening to anything good lately?

They didn't go well? Fuuuuck man that blows. It was some tough sciencey stuff right? Not getting a full-sized break between the spring semester and summer probably affected it too. At least you're doing something though -- I haven't done a goddamn thing. The past month or so I've actually been playing video games (weird because I haven't played much anything since high school, intentionally, because they can be super absorbing). It's downright Skinner box manipulation the way I'm completing quests. So I'm trying to wean myself off of them now. Started reading a book and soon I'm gonna try watching longer-winded movies to help expand my patience.

Oh fuck your birthday was a week ago wasn't it? Happy late birthday to you friend! I feel you on being busy -- no worries.

Word, partner. Let me know what ya think of whichever ones you watch. I did the same thing with poetry lol - just scribble garbage in a notebook every day until eventually you strike gold. It's a great idea, but hard to keep up.

Please do that my dude. That's a reasonable way to improve your speaking. It can be about whatever you want, no crowd anxiety, etc. And you can show off your handsome image :^) I've thought about keeping a diary about various media to improve my writing skills. But I assume you can attest that finding the time is difficult. By the way, when you do find some time, you should check out the short films of Toshio Matsumoto. They're mostly exercises in editing, and have very peculiar imagery. I think you'd dig it. --- Biochem research huh? That's neat! Maybe we'll still be talking about this while in grad school. Just kidding, grad students have no free time.

God bless u fam <3 Whenever I can't sleep I'll turn on this playlist on the TV -- it'll be nice to have some fresh material. There is a lot of Japshit with that kind of aesthetic. Btw I know your youtube channel now ༼ʘ̚ل͜ʘ̚༽ ---- I feel u on chemistry. What is your major again? I've forgotten.

You know what, I'm just gonna make that playlist unlisted and give you the link to add stuff to it. Look in your DMs.

Ohhhhh fuck this is a cool music video. If you know any other vids like this pls send them to me because I've been aggregating MVs that look like they're from a VHS or public access tv in a playlist (like https://youtu.be/OD_rG9FTjy0 and https://youtu.be/tXtWTRgJQWo). Dope song, too. There's a lot of neat-looking rec's on youtube for it as well. Anyway, yeah I graduated son B^) I'm living the NEET life. Good luck with that chemistry shit, I hated that stuff in high school, avoided it like the plague in undergrad. Do you like it?

Yeah, 3 month breaks are sweet. You're already done with your minor requirements? Got damn, I was taking them up til the end (I just finished college btw :3) What kind of science are you studying over the summer?
操作
-
DrMopinker
Wow, that is a coincidence. Your schedule isn't totally bizarre, it's just classes around here end a month sooner. You're taking summer classes though?

It's a great finale! My gf is watching Twin Peaks right now and I'm making her save the finale for when I can watch it with her. It's too damn good. Nightcrawler was very good too! Gyllenhaal has always been a favorite of mine but hadn't been casted in much good stuff til NC. He did a great job with it -- reminded me of Travis from Taxi Driver. You have finals through May?

Well it depends. A lot of folks call Lost Highway a dry-run for Mulholland Dr, which isn't really incorrect, because they're both erotic, neo-noir fever dreams that explore identity, but LH is great in its own right. LH embraces genre horror elements more than MD and turns the surrealism up to 11. I'd also say it's a more fun and adrenaline-pumping film. Mulholland, while a lot of people do call it a horror film, isn't so in the genre sense; the aesthetic it embraces instead is old Hollywood. There are more Twin Peaks vibes in it, and after repeated viewings I'd say it's Lynch's masterpiece. Very emotional as well. So decide based on all that. I saw LH first and turned out fine. Tbh you should do Lost Highway first, based on your taste in stuff I'd say that'd resonate with you more. A musical equivalent of it would be, like, John Zorn x Bohren & der Club of Gore. Maybe it's because Naked City is on my mind lately.

It was aired on a major cable network, so yeah there was a ton of corporate supervision. The most ridiculous of which is the Twin Peaks sign that says population of 51k, which is ridiculous given how the town is always talked about as small and secluded. ABC made that happen because they didn't want to alienate suburban viewers in mid-sized cities, something like that. Mulholland Dr was originally supposed to be a tv series produced by ABC and they told Lynch he could only have characters smoking if they said something about needing to quit. So we should be glad Showtime is the resurrector. They know that viewers will be the hardcore fans who want the trademark Lynch treatment. Yeah it's a bummer about Log Lady :( she was one of the handful of crew members on Eraserhead. I think they did get some scenes with her though, because she's listed in the final cast.

That's great! It's the GOAT show if you ask me. And don't worry about your opinion on S2 -- you're far from alone. Lynch will probably come through on S3 though since he'll have significantly fewer restrictions from the network, and the script won't get into anyone else's hands.

Did not cop but did listen and did enjoy. Jamie Stewart made a playlist thing not too long ago of Twin Peaks songs with his thoughts on each one; you should check it out, it changed my perspective on some of them. Have you finished Twin Peaks? I remember you feeling indifferent toward it a while back.

Well, greatest hits collections can be useful if the artist has an extensive discography. But if you're gonna put down money I agree, albums are the way to go. The Goslings are dope! They basically are shoegaze with the noise turned up. Boris's cover of Sometimes gives you a bit more space in the mastering though, as opposed to Goslings' front-and-center noise.

Ah I gotchu. You been crate digging for that stuff in your nice NY record shops? Gensho is great, by the way. Don't do what I did and listen to each album separately first. You know all the Boris songs; you don't need extended drumless (studio) versions of them (the early live drumless versions of stuff like Huge are rad). Listen to them combined from the start. It's fucking great. And have fun adjusting the volume of each as you go - some parts like on Rainbow the Merzbow side is unjustifiably harsh but other times like on the MBV cover they make magic being loud together.

That is pretty darn neat. I'll listen to it soon. Did you die btw? If so revive yourself 'cause Gensho leaked not too long ago.

Ah, my b :-) I know zilch about classical, but I did happen to cop that Erik Satie joint on slsk the other week, just haven't listened to it. What do you think of it?

I think he's legit compared himself to andy warhol in the past. he's definitely referenced him before like in the Heartless video. I don't buy it, but i know what you mean. he thinks he can pump out hip-hop music like warhol did with his "factory", but he thinks that means being lazy with the production, maybe. idk. goddamn him for making great singles like Real Friends and Waves.

Lmao is that what you've been hearing about it? I've only seen positive reviews for it (outside of the melon head). It's uhhhhhh... something. Just like with Yeezus, if he wants to do something ambitious, he needs to actually put some ambition into it. I'm talking lyrically mostly. But the beats are also way less polished than they should be for a project of this scope. So many times he comes close to being brilliant but the production could use some major tweaks. And if he wants to rap as the Kanye persona that's fine, but he needs to make it tasteful like on MBDTF, like he's self aware. He's crossing into Lil B territory but without B's dedication to stylistic extremity, if that makes sense.

It might be because of Atsuo's j-pop obsession. I think he even started a blog a while back to talk about cute anime-esque j-pop singles. But at the same time I'm sure the other two weren't just humoring Atsuo; their sound change was probably a group effort. But their perspective on noisy rock just doesn't mesh well with that kind of pop music y'know.

IKR, it sounds even better than Rock Dream. And it makes me feel better that none of the Boris tracks are new, cause they've lost me over the past few years. Getting a refurbished edition of Rock Dream will be just right.

i'm trying to link you to youtubedoubler and say to listen for yourself but the link doesn't work. Search youtube for "boris gensho" and find the links for the boris and merzbow tracks and pop them into yt doubler. It's a Dronevil type situation where there are two albums played simultaneously.

Well, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Plus, if they're rich old folk they probably don't mind paying a little extra if they can keep crate digging. But the crosleys, someone needs to start an ad campaign against them or something so ignorant millennials can know they're ruining their records.
操作
-
DrMopinker
Yeah, it was rad. You're probably right; I bet most customers at these places are either middle aged people who don't know what a Discogs is or trendy young people who are just victims of Crosley marketing. There's one place here that lets you test records on a fucking Crosley in-store. Wtf. I don't think I want to buy anything from there on the off chance someone did that to a record I'm interested in.
操作

You're a lucky duck. The few record places around here aren't that good. Some good stuff like Bob Dylan or Frank Zappa you can consistently find but at higher prices than online. Anyway, did you find anything? I did psychedelic mushrooms the first time for New Years. It was a pretty fun ride.

No preference really. My favorite jazz album is Monk's Dream, if that helps. Though I think Ugly's new album has inspired a memphis rap marathon c:

Genre marathons are really fun... I should do them more often. Jazz would be a good one since I know almost nothing about it.
操作
-
DrMopinker
Yes! Scenery was my first jazz album actually. I forgot how great it was. That's funny that you have an end date for a genre marathon lol. Do you do that regularly?
操作
-
DrMopinker
Yeah, that's what I thought of first too. It seems like a genre good for clicking on random youtube videos for to just experience as much of it as possible and get lost in it. Well, that's how I'd listen to it anyway. Do you listen to full albums for it?
