Also, while every apatt song is built from an entirely distinct framework, unlike Bungle they haven't really endeavoured to construct drawn-out pieces built on themes that span several styles/genres within the course of the single song.

As for A.P.A.T.T. - well, I suppose the Mr. Bungle comparisons are inevitable, and there's nothing wrong in that per se. After all, both bands made heavy use of the 'genre-shifting' ethic, throwing in the air and against the wall an insane number of ideas from composite sources. A.P.A.T.T are obviously a much younger, inexperienced band who simply do not have the level of experience & funding that Mr. Bungle had. As far as I can hear, sonically, the 'genre-shifting' elements are where the similarities begin and end. I don't think any of their songs sound particularly Bungle-esque, and while Mr. Bungle have clearly ventured into territory that A.P.A.T.T haven't, I think that these guys have been doing really creative things stylistically with modern media platforms that Bungle never did. But of course, that's largely due to the fact that the vimeo, Youtube & other nice tidbits weren't available in those days. For such a young bunch, they really seem to give a shit about their craft.

Ah! :) When I have more time for music, I usually don't find it particularly difficult to seek out independent musicians who make provoking, cutting-edge music - some of whom don't have much of a last.fm presence, if any. I suppose it is (or was... traditionally) due to my obsessive desire to follow-up similar artists recommended on last.fm and random weirdos I used to encounter on Soulseek. Slsk is brilliant for lifting music from dudes/dudettes no-one has ever heard of. Additionally, lots of stuff in my library that falls well below the radar simply comes from having attended many gigs, most of them being in dingy little clubs. Unless a band is really unconscionably bad, I almost always try to get their stuff. That's not to say that one should judge music on how many people know about it at all. So many obscure bands I've encountered over the years have been awful. However, it's always good to learn new music-discovery tactics, though. You end up excavating so many gems that way!

Hmm... interesting way to put it. But I think that phenomenon has more to do with subjective taste and your personal attachment to the music than the quality of the music itself. Personally, I think the Beatles and the Beach Boys were on equal footing. So in a way, I am indeed rebelling against Nakkinak and Mogli's "OMG THE BEACH BOYS WERE BETTER" thing

The White Album is great, but it's hard to compare it to Pet Sounds. Too different. I'm not sure which one I like more. Anyway, I've decided I hate ranking and rating music. It gives me a headache.

lol Modest Mouse early music sounds literally nothing like Float On. There's no telling if you'll like 90's Modest Mouse or not. Try the Lonesome Crowded West. It will either sound like utter shit to you, or be one of the greatest albums you'll ever hear, depending on personal taste and level of patience.

It's a shame, really. I don't think you're talking crap at all. Even the most devoted art connoisseur cannot reference the artist who has not accrued *some* commercial attention and a fanbase that can be attributed to some form of advertising. I find that to be the case especially when I'm going through phases, such as currently, in which I don't find myself listening to anywhere near as much music as I'd like. The few things that filter through are either things I'm long familiar with (a handful that have maintained virtual complete artistic independence) or more frequently lots of things that have a much more lauded batch of press cuttings appended to them. So you only end up hearing about music by bands that have either been around for ages, or are massively huge due to appearing on X-Factor, Hello! magazine, or else being propelled into existence any quantity of 'social media' (ads) fuelled viral fan-gushing. Lots of great music is sidelined in the process. We're responsible.

We Were Dead (the album with Johnny Marr) is poppy like Good News, but it's a lot more cohesive and is overall a much better album. But both Good News and We Were Dead pale in comparison to everything else.

Yeah, the most recent was Rush. I've been a few times and it's always been sub-par except for the time I saw Roger Waters there, and it sounded amazing. I guess it depends if the band uses the venue's gear or not?

Not really, it just tends to represent an inclination in musical/aesthetical habits that I don't like to be associated with. So I don't feel like deigning to 'name' it, but that's a personal decision. I won't judge or criticise if you choose to ;) I don't have anything against frequent attendees of those festivals, though. But I wish that such a big platform would be subverted by truly iconoclastic and spiritually honest musicians more often though, and that it wasn't all so beholden to insane multi-national corporate interests. Knebworth stopped being about the music some time ago, I think.

Apparently Auschwitz takes a whole day to experience properly (I didn't get the chance to see it this time), so all things considered that's still a hefty trip. I was only in Kraków for a day myself, we spent the night there after taking an 8 hour train journey from my 'lovely host's' town closer to the West. But regardless of where you are in Poland, it is all about the colour schemes, I'm tellin' ya! It's like a rainbow :D I might go to Hitchin next week for the farmer's market. Hm.

Elliot! :D I'm glad its you. I was wondering what happened to you after I found out you got banned a few days ago.... haha, naughty ;-) It was amazing! Poland is a truly beautiful place - walking through cities gives you an impression of a much more classical, antiquated country. I love the style of architecture and the way every building seems to have its own colour scheme. I loved the opportunity to practise the language and everyone was really nice to me. I got to ride one of those compartment-based trains, like in the Bond movies! And trams. :D I went to Kraków and visited the high bell towers of Wawel, walked for miles with my girlfriend only to stop at a wonderful little tea house. The effects were intoxicating...

that would have been a terribly cruel joke to play!

yeah im fine now, its cool, it the appendix burst without me noticing and then after a week the pains became unbearable and i fainted at dinner. i was taken to the hospital for immediate surgery. it was a near death experience i was told. im glad i got through. in the hospital i caught pneumonia it was terrible, but its all good now. what about you, hows life going? :)
