I'm a huge fan of Ghosts 'n Stuff with Rob Swire shouting along, and Raise Your Weapon's explosiveness, but that's about it. (Not even Imogen Heap could save him!)

I wonder if it's the naked EDM "sound" that causes that problem? Now that I think about it, the electronic albums I love the most are all a mixture of electronic and non-electronic sounds. Shinichi Osawa's The One. Hybrid's Disappear Here. BT's These Hopeful Machines. Underworld's Barking. Massive Attack's Mezzanine. The Chemical Brothers's and Pendulum's bombastic efforts... They all are enriching the electronic elements with known-good qualities from other genres, whether it's a jazz groove, a pop hook, or the perfect guitar riff. It might also be because they're genuinely creating good melodies that can be translated to, say, piano or the 8-bit Gameboy and not lose their appeal. Too much of modern dance music is relying on the atmosphere to cover up the songwriting deficiencies. I think Nakata has an edge there, over someone like Deadmau5.

This one is risky, he's gone more towards a sound many feel is overplayed. Generic techno and house from the mid 90s sounds absolutely terrible now, but geniuses like Underworld managed to create songs that were so good, so utterly unlike the rest of the aural landscpae, they still get airtime 20 years later! (Pearl's Girl, circa 1996, is in Gran Turismo 6, for instance.) It's hard to do that when the noise you create sounds like everyone else's noise, right? So this album is a gamble. It'll move copies today because it sounds like ZeddSkrillexKnifePartyBoyzNoizeGeneroElectroGroup#10, but will it move copies in 5 or 10 years? Hard to say. I've only got a few playthroughs of it, but I'm leaning towards a solid "no" on that rhetorical question. Jumper I played on repeat for a few days. I've racked up endless plays of LDK -> Sugarless Girl in my car's dusty old CD player over the years, but I can't see this one staying in the rotation forever. Feel Again will, probably, and Hero. But...

Read your review of Wave Runner. I think the elements you touched on, how this unites old(er) sk00l capsule with the modern EDM thing Nakata has been experimenting with for a decade now are the keys to answering the question, "Why is Wave Runner so much better than World of Fantasy and Stereo Jokexx?". It's the marriage of Fruits Clipper capsule with the modern EDM thing. I found capsule halfway through their life, when a friend who loves the Shibuya-Kei capsule linked me to Tokyo Smiling. I was incredibly impressed with them at that point, but when I found Sugarless Girl later in that Youtubing session, their breakout single from their (at the time) latest album, I kept YouTube on repeat all night long. Over time, the body of works Nakata created from LDK to Sugarless Girl have risen to become bloody brilliant works that are as catchy and ludicrously addictive in 2015 as they were in 2005->2007.
