Oh, hey! I can't even tell you how glad I was to hear from you again! It also took me a while to respond too so as you know - it's never a problem. I hope you moved already since it sounds like you really need some time to yourself; in any case I hope things are better for you! It's kind of hard for me to talk about Miyuki and where I left off since it's been such a long time - and I don't know if you noticed but it's been really hard for me to listen to her albums as I did before. I finished listening to all of them, but the last 2 or 3 I only listened to once. Actually, even getting myself to listen to them once was really hard, I don't know why exactly. I just want to mention the songs that I really did like since we last stopped talking. 愛だけを残せ is especially, well, special to me. I don't even know why I like it as much as I do - but it was really refreshing to hear a song like that from her - not to mention the amazing verses it has.

From DRAMA! only a few songs stood out like 翼をあげて and NOW. Thanks for telling me what you did about 真夜中の動物園 because I honestly didn't notice. I'm not surprised because I barely paid attention to the lyrics. Again - I don't know what happened but for these few albums they barely held my interest. On 荒野より I think the only song I liked was 帰郷群. Sure, there are some songs here like in the other newer albums that I liked but they're nothing special. 常夜灯, however, I enjoyed a lot more. The title track reminds me of 女という商売, but I really do like it. 月はそこにいる is my absolute favorite from that album though. I've only listened to the last three albums a few times and can't really comment much on them. So, this is the shortest I could put what I got from these albums. Also, I think it would help having translations too since a lot of times I find I miss the entire point of the songs. But you don't have to apologize in any way for not providing scans - that takes time and it's okay if you don't.

Regarding Kalafina, I agree 100% with everything you said. I feel like we both feel the same about all of their albums - especially when reading your comments about them individually in their shoutboxes. I honestly knew they would disband but not this soon. It really got to me too since they were incredibly special and unique to me. So you're not the only one for certain who feels this way. I'll miss them greatly - there is just not a group in this world that is even remotely like them.

It's really heartwarming to know you've been checking on my profile from time to time. I do the same with you to be honest just to see what you're listening to and if you're around. I'm all right as you see and I hope it's the same with you! Also, I really just wanted to thank you for guiding me through Miyuki's discography - it's been an incredible journey and without you I wouldn't have known such important things about her songs themselves. You changed my entire perception of them since you let me know the stories behind a lot of them. I'm really grateful for that. I don't think I can remember Miyuki's music and not remember you, haha.

hey there, I understand that you're quite the Miyuki expert. I don't know if you've read any of my shouts on Chiharo's profile but I've also embarked on my own Miyuki Nakadventure, and am 10 albums in. thought you might like to know!

Hey! Sorry it took me a while to respond. I took a pause with Miyuki because of Namie's retirement (wanted to focus on her and the new album a bit), and every other week I'm in a different place now where I can't scrobble to last.fm (most of the time) which is why my scrobbles have been so low lately. I'm glad my wishes came in time, that makes me happy. You know, I've never met anyone on the internet who has been as thoughtful as you are, and in general that's so incredibly rare, so if there was anyone's birthday worth writing down it was definitely yours. In the way you write about things and in that thoughtfulness I can really relate to you, so I guess - thanks for making me feel less alone. Well, going back to Miyuki: サーモン・ダンス is totally my favorite so far, I think, from all of her newer albums I listened to. It's such a great song and so fun to sing along. Also, the other song I adore from that album is 無限・軌道. A wonderful song, and her vocals sound great.

ララバイSINGER definitely is a good album, overall quite enjoyable. I didn't even pay attention to the lyrics of 水, lol. I sometimes don't do that when the song doesn't jump out at me. So that was very insightful and made me want to listen to it again. Oh yeah, I was pretty sad for Namie but a part of me was glad. Because her latest releases were just bad IMO, at least most of them. I didn't like the direction she was going in, and knowing that she just does whatever is popular at the moment didn't give me high hopes for her music. So a part of me is glad. If she still did Hip Hop and RnB I'd probably feel really bummed out. Even though Mai released an album, what is she even going to do next? It feels like she is maybe retiring all over again, lol. And oh, sure. You can send me a private message with your Skype information since it's one of the programs I do use, or if anything else is convenient that's fine with me.

Hey, I just wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday. I hope you have a good day (and that I figured and wrote down your birthday correctly lol)!

Oh yeah, it's totally not as dark as her older albums, nowhere close. But it does have a dark feel to it. I do want a translation of it, too. I decided to skip over いまのきもち, because it doesn't really have a single new song on it. And I didn't really like the rearranged versions of the songs (I listened to it once). So I moved on to 転生 which kind of really bored me in my first two listens, nothing stands out. I'm kind of moving really slow through her discography because of that. I hope she has more memorable songs as I go on. Haha, I also thought you were a bit older than me. But for me that's normal to think because I'm the youngest in my family. Yeah, I'm not particularly busy but lately I've had more things to do which also contributes to not listening to Miyuki's new albums, and when I do have time to listen I want to listen to things I feel like listening to rather than just go through an album where I don't enjoy most of the songs at first, lol.

The hobby that stops me from playing guitar is simply nail art, lol. I know that sounds silly, but if I want to keep my nails even a bit longer I can't play the guitar. Oh, violin sounds so cool! But it always seemed to me to be hard to learn. How was it for you? I only play the guitar, but I've tried some piano and gave up too, haha. I think Miyuki would cry if she heard me play how bad I'd be for her standards, lol.

Oh yes, that's great! I was really worrying that she'd stop releasing albums now that I've started listening to her. Because that's what happens to me a lot with artists. It happened with Mai Kuraki, too. She just released OVER THE RAINBOW when I became a fan, and she never since released another album except for Smile which was kind of meh anyway. Even if I'm sure I won't be done with her discography when she releases the new album, I'm glad she's still releasing. And the cover also looks good, you're right it does feel a bit Mexican with the clothes. I know about アリア - Air - and I wonder what her version of it is going to be like. Anyway, I'll report on 転生 when I stop being lazy in listening to it, haha.

I totally forgot to tell you that I bought 36.5C, the limited CD release that comes in the cardboard sleeve. Also, I got はじめまして on vinyl, too. The cover is too pretty not to have it, but it's also one of my favorite albums by her. The content of the vinyl (the extra papers, etc.) is not as big as it was on みんな去ってしまった. It only comes with one paper that includes the lyrics. And there are no other pictures of Miyuki except on the vinyl itself (my profile picture) and of her legs inside the sleeve, lol. But I'm so happy I got them both!

Well I'm also a bit late in replying now. I decided to start re-listening all of Miyuki's albums from the beginning, and I wanted to reply when I listened to 恋文 enough. Wow, software engineer? That sounds like an amazing job. I'm a bit younger than you, 24. But also most people assume I'm a teenager because I look much younger, lol. So I get that part. It does sound like you're really busy. Honestly, I don't even have a job but still feel like I don't have enough free time. So I imagine that if I only got a full time job I'd take muuch longer to reply. I always hear about Pokemon Go but people here don't really play that game much as it's not popular. Thank you for telling me a little more about yourself, I appreciate that. About 化粧, it does make sense that you'd easily skip on it when your approach was finding only certain types of songs. That also used to be my way when searching through an artist's discography until I switched to listening full albums a certain number of times.

You described 孤独の肖像 1st really well! You know, I always loved that line "どうせみんなひとりぽっち 海の底にいるみたい". But I especially love the final part of the original song, it really sounds intense and powerful. Yeah, 1st version is really a great alternative approach to the whole song. It's amazing how much changing the arrangement changes a song in how it feels, even if the lyrics are almost the same. Haha yeah I saw just how many YouTube covers there are for Miyuki's songs. Every song has a cover uploaded there. I don't think I'd really put my own up, especially now that I stopped playing guitar for a while (because I have another hobby which prevents me from playing if I want to keep it up, I know that sounds weird probably).

Actually, 心守歌 is probably going to end up as my favorite 00s album from her. Honestly my play counts are like that because I almost like every song equally, and because that album is the best to listen to as a whole. The cover at first threw me off because she's smiling on it, yet all of the songs are pretty dark and atmospheric. Which is what I love about it. And it's quite folk-ish. I especially love to listen to the songs from it when riding in the car and looking out the window when the weather is really gloomy. おとぎばなし-Fairy Ring- had some nice songs especially at the beginning, but I still prefer 心守歌. 恋文 is okay but nothing special. 銀の龍の背に乗って is the only song I truly love. The others are enjoyable here and there and likeable, but not to the point where I'd listen to them too many times. But for some reason I still feel like I need to listen to it more.

I was so relieved to see you respond! I did assume that you were probably just busy, and I hope I wasn't too nosy or anything like that, but it did make me worry a bit and wonder if all was fine. And do take your time, please. Thank you for taking the time to even respond to me, not to mention scan the translations even though you're busy. While I'm still not done with 短篇集, I've definitely listened to it enough times to form an opinion. But I'll reply to you first! Haha, yeah, I definitely would not sings songs like that. But if I would, it would be an extremely quiet version of it. And yeah, うらみ・ます would be so funny to sing in a situation like that. It's funny that the only song I don't like as much from her second album is れられるものならば. I don't know why either, it is a nice song with a nice melody but it's like I really don't get anything from it. I even learned how to play うそつきが好きよ on guitar how much I love it! And it definitely has a happy sound and if someone doesn't know the meaning of the lyrics it could mislead them into thinking it's a genuinely happy song. And oh, I didn't know you didn't like 化粧 as much before. I think that's my favorite from its album. It definitely sounds the most emotional out of all the songs.

It probably is mostly due to her vocals that the song sounds so emotional. I also can't help but tear up when listening to it sometimes. I did notice that you started scrobbling a lot more! I like that you listened to 孤独の肖像 1st. as much as you did lately, I really love that song and that version is also really good. And ohh, I totally understand where you're coming from with not knowing how to tag songs! That's very important to me but as you said, it's sometimes really hard to find what's the right tag for a song. I noticed we have tagged some songs differently and I didn't know what to do, because I already scrobbled a lot of plays and didn't want to mess around with them. Also, I've scrobbled the WINGS albums wrong a few times because of the wrong dash, and had to delete the srobbles and replace them, ugh. Actually I think 根雪 is the one we have tagged differently.

I removed the hiragana because when I downloaded her albums a lot of them had the hiragana in the parenthesis as an indicator of how to read them, so I just removed it for 根雪. But it's hard to tell whether it's the actual title or not a lot of times. I should totally catch up with the Yakai's, I always plan to but then never do. So... about 短篇集. I didn't like it at the first listen, but it really grew on me like almost all of her albums do (if not all?). 地上の星 is really amazing, as I expected it to be because I know it's popular. And also, she really does sound like an old lady in that song, lol. 帰省 is quite pretty, 後悔 has a nice chorus with a good melody. I also like MERRY-GO-ROUND even if it's nothing special, the chorus is always stuck in my head for some reason. 天使の階段 and 結婚 are also quite beautiful. 結婚 has this celtic feeling to it which is really cool - and I love how it ends. ヘッドライト・テールライト is the most beautiful song on the album.

At first I didn't think of that song as good but with time you really notice the beauty. No wonder it was well received (I guess it was?). The upbeat songs like Tell me, Sister and 過ぎゆく夏 are very welcome and pretty good. There are really no songs on this album that I would like so much to listen to them constantly for a while, though. But even so, overall the album is very nice to listen to and there isn't a single song that bores me.

Well, you really did surprise me because people don't even bother to think about things like those. I mean, it's usually expected that no one would think anything or just go "oh well, I don't know what happened" and not be bothered even for a moment. And thank you, again. Haha, yeah, it's a pretty hilarious thing I never expected to happen. To be honest, I felt a lot more comfortable singing while they were talking to each other, they could hear me but it wasn't as awkward when silence would come in and all they could hear were depressing songs. Yeah, I bet all they were thinking was honestly just "this girl is crazy", haha. Regarding the vinyl, I really love that back cover too! I know what you mean when you say it reminds you of 生きていてもいいですか, I also like that picture. I'm just so happy I got it. Whoa, you described 紅灯の海 really beautifully, it made me more interested in it. I did listen to it back when I read your message first and I could see what you mean.

I didn't even think I'll be able to get this far, honestly, but it has been so fun. I used to think that artists with 10 albums had "huge" discographies, lol. Regarding the Singles compilations, yeah, I downloaded that but split all the songs into singles. I did this because I really don't like listening to compilation albums, and also because I prefer to listen to all b-sides from an album's era while I'm on that album. First of all, I'm SO glad you mentioned 霧に走る and that you like it so much. It's probably my favorite b-side of her, together with a few others. I really love the melody and the music, it all fits so well. And her vocals that sound so fragile, together with the very relate-able lyrics, I just love it! I like the short version of シーサイド・コーポラス from the album a bit more, maybe because I'm just used to it. But I adore that song. Other favorites from S1 (not including album tracks): 笑わせるじゃないか (a big favorite), ほうせんか, こんばんわ, 傷ついた翼, さよなら さよなら.

I do like most of the others b-sides, but not THAT much. From S2 the only song that stands out is シュガー out of the b-sides. I like ジェラシー・ジェラシー too. Oh, I almost forgot to write about the actual songs on WINGS albums. 日-WINGS: First track is so beautiful. I especially love the outro. A song that I didn't expect would grow on me so much is いつか夢の中へ. It sounds really comforting somehow, and I like the male vocalist (do you know who he is?). And I like the lyrics. I love 知人・友人・愛人・家人 and the mentioned Castaway song. After those, all of the songs are actually pretty good, the only one I have trouble with is あなたの言葉がわからない. It's a bit too long and the ABCD thing sounds a bit awkward, lol. 異国の女 is really good as well. 月-WINGS: First track I really enjoy, especially the verses and the added short English lines. I think they fit really well. 紅い河 I do like, it sounds quite ethereal. LAST SCENE is AMAZING! I'd honestly love it if the entire song was just the first 3 minutes!

You're right about 女という商売, I love it's jazzy-ness. The chorus is pretty cool too. However my favorite from probably both albums is... SMILE, SMILE. Honestly, I'd never expect her to make a song like this, which is why I probably love it so much. I also love the way she sings it and the effects they put on the vocals in the first verse. It's just a cute song with fun melody. At least I don't hear any hidden darkness within it, but I guess for Miyuki it's always possible. PAIN is also good. I like the way it's arranged and the length is no problem at all. It's the kind of songs that pulls that off well. Other songs are pretty nice, but there's nothing I really have to say about them. I kind of stopped listening to the albums because I got carried away by something that's been going on in my life, but I'll be done with them soon so I'm moving onto 短篇集!

First of all, thank you for your thoughtfulness and kind words. I never expected anyone to think anything of the fact that I didn't scrobble anything - much less to make an effort to check on my listening history because they were worried, even a bit. What you wrote actually really surprised me and made my day. It's really strange but also humbling to think that someone who I've never met would worry about me, even if a little bit. So thank you, a lot. What you wrote about Miyuki being your secret treasure for years is a feeling I can understand well (Well, not with Miyuki for me, but with certain other things). I'm really glad I decided to listen to her and send you a message, because otherwise I would have missed out on a lot of important things that I would probably never even know about her music. And well, I'd also miss the delight of talking with you!

Yeah, the vinyl does come with the piano sheets! It all really looks so nice all together. I'll take the pictures today and post another shout a bit later. Ahh, so the 真直な線 fade out thing is an actual thing. That makes me want to actually listen to the vinyl even more, because the fade out is so unnatural. I mean it just ends abruptly that I feel like it had to be a mistake. It's interesting that you say 紅灯の海 is your favorite. Can you explain why? That's one of the songs that caught my attention the least somehow, at least musically. I'll have to listen to it again and check out the lyrics. Regarding the mastering, if you'd listen to Namie's latest single for example - you'd witness how horrible mastering can get even for artists who are very famous. Really, anyone can hear on any equipment why those songs sound horrible. It's just a matter of luck in who's the mastering engineer, but mostly it's just a thing that happened with age which forced engineers to master badly (long story).
操作
-
Aloysiana
Anyway, as for Miyuki's albums, her best mastered ones are probably the ones I already mentioned. She really, mostly has well mastered albums. There is not a record so far for which I could say that it sounds bad. There are details I noticed - for example 生きていてもいいですか has quite a high noise floor which is very audible throughout the whole album. Which is not good but... at least the songs aren't distorted in any way. Only album specifically where I noticed subpar mastering was 回帰熱. All of the songs sound a bit too muffled and they lack definition. This is especially noticeable in あり、か. I also heard Miyuki's vocals clipping in a few songs, but very few and I can't remember which ones they were. But when I do run into them I will give you an example.

I still have a long way to listen to both 日-WINGS and 月-WINGS, but so far I pretty much liked all of the songs that you mentioned as good. Also, I really like Good Morning, Ms. Castaway and 知人・友人・愛人・家人. 月-WINGS I only listened to once so I can't really comment much on it (although I did like PAIN and LAST SCENE!). I decided I'd listen to both albums, one at day and other at night, haha. Just thought it could be better to change things up a bit. So yeah, I'll report more on the albums once I get to know them more. Well, no matter how her newer music turns out to be I'll definitely make sure I listen to everything until the end. Looking back I'm so surprised how far I've come in her discography. It's so huge yet I managed to get close to the "end".

Oh, one really funny thing I wanted to mention. When I was in the hospital, I shared my room with two older ladies. And they were talking non-stop yet I was so tired and wanted to sleep. At one point I got really annoyed (it's especially hard when you're in pain and just want to rest!) and started singing. Then I asked them is it okay if I sing and they said go ahead. Can you imagine what I sang? It was only Miyuki's songs, haha. I sing as a hobby and I tried some of Miyuki's songs before which is how I remembered all of the lyrics to a few of the songs. So the ladies had a short Miyuki covers show, lol. I sang 彼女の生き方, 遍路, 追いかけてヨコハマ, あばよ, 春までなんぼ, シーサイド・コーポラス and I think that's it. Of course, I wasn't singing very loudly seeing as it was a hospital but they could hear me, and one of the ladies wanted me to sing more. It was really hilarious but it helped made me feel better and kill the time.

Hey! So, you maybe noticed I wasn't around on last.fm, which is why I couldn't reply to you as I usually would. What happened is that I got hospitalized and had to spend a week there. Thankfully everything is fine now and I can continue my Miyuki music journey! Great, I saw the single cover and it looks like it's an old photo of her? I do hope this means an album! And thank you SO MUCH for those translations! And there's even the next two albums which I'm sure I'll get to pretty soon. I haven't listened to much of わたしの子供になりなさい yet, but so far I do like pretty much all the songs on these 3-4 times that I've listened to the album. Although the only track that really stands out is 4.2.3. (those lyrics are great!) and I love how dark it sounds to complement the lyrics.

I received my みんな去ってしまった vinyl, and I'm so happy I got it! I wanted to take pictures but I couldn't find the time for that yet. But it's so amazing to have the entire album in such a huge format physically right in front of me. And there's a whole page of Miyuki's photos inside, the lyrics of course + piano sheets. I'm really happy with it. I really wish I could play it. Oh, the lossless CD version I downloaded of this album from JPS has this weird fade out thing on track 真直な線 where it cuts off very abruptly in the middle of Miyuki still singing. I fixed this by editing in the fade out to make the transition more natural. I'm pretty sure this must be either a ripping mistake or a studio mistake. Do you have the same thing on your CD?

One other thing before I forget - it's so funny that 私の声が聞こえますか is better mastered and sounds way better than most of the songs being released today in 2017. When you think about it that album was recorded in the 70's yet manages to sound like it's more from the future by its quality than most stuff released in 2010's. I noticed that the audio quality of Miyuki's stuff varies - of course these albums have been remastered for CDs a few times and transferred from analog to digital first of all. So there might be different reasons why some albums sound amazing and some not as. But even so, none of her albums so far have had terrible mastering. I wanted to mention LOVE OR NOTHING (this one was originally released on a CD but it doesn't matter), the mastering on that album is superb. Listening to 空と君のあいだに and 風にならないか on full volume is a bliss.

Thanks for all that interesting info, I'll try checking that Mortal World song out. SINGLES BAR just captivates me in how raw and honest it sounds. It's also quite emotional and I actually wanted to hear a song like this from her. And I also love how the strings are added to complement the most heartbreaking and lonely parts of the lyrics. Oh yeah, I also like たかが愛, and really all of the songs are quite nice from that album. Regarding わたしの子供になりなさい, I forgot that I also like 愛情物語 a lot. And oh, a question! And since I'm already almost done with Paradise Cafe (I had more time to listen and I wanted to advance more quickly in her discography) it was really useful. Do you know what is the meaning of "blue generation"? Lyrically Paradise Cafe is quite interesting. By the way, those official translations are really good, I was surprised. I wish all Jpop albums had that, hah! Anyway, overall while I do like Paradise Cafe, I found that there's only one or two songs I really love, while I just like everything else. SINGLES BAR and ALONE, PLEASE are the ones I really like the most. I like the positive side you presented on もう桟橋に灯りは点らない lyrics. It's amazing how much lyrics can be analyzed and how many different sides there could be to them,

Oh wow, you've known her for such a long time. I honestly don't know where I was since I started looking up Japanese music since 2005. I can't believe I've never heard about her up until last year. What happened with me is that I wanted to try out some Jpop oldies from 80's. And then I got Seiko Matsuda and some other idol pop, and while I enjoyed only one album and a few songs, I couldn't really get into their other albums because they just sounded boring to me, lol. But actually, I think that the first time I saw Miyuki was on your profile picture. And I remember thinking that image is so pretty! And I wanted to know who it is. I think I checked her last.fm page out for a bit but then I forgot about her. It's only later that last.fm recommended her again, and I looked her discography up, read a little on her and she seemed really interesting. Then I downloaded みんな去ってしまった because I thought the title was interesting and the cover too.

It was just random that I chose that album because I didn't plan on listening to her entire discography at that point, otherwise I'd start from the beginning. I remember how shocked I was at how great her vocals are as soon as she started singing. And I found the melodies interesting and just the overall sound of the album. But I also really enjoyed just paying attention to the lyrics which are probably what completely drew me in. This started to happen mostly on 彼女の生き方. And totally, I hope I can get to "wait" for one of her new albums, too! Although I wouldn't listen to it yet because I still have like half of her discography to go through, haha.

Thank you for taking the time to share your translation! You did quite an amazing job. There were some parts that I couldn't really understand by just listening, so this was great to read. I love the lyrics, too. I think most of us can relate to the feeling she's conveying. I really love how "human" her lyrics are. Also regarding her lyrics in general - I have great respect for the fact that Miyuki is not afraid to write the kind of lyrics she can and does write. For example, if I was in her shoes I don't know if I would be able to put out lyrics like what a lot of her songs have out of fear of being judged somehow. I don't know if that makes sense. I guess this is not strange for artists to do, but I respect what she does. And also, I kind of do feel a bit lost now that Greg doesn't have any more translations for this album and the next few ones. Also, I really have no clue where to see the official English translations. You're really lucky to have all of her albums!

And don't worry about taking a while to respond, I'm just really grateful to have someone tell me so much about Miyuki's music and to discuss it, even if it's from time to time. I ordered みんな去ってしまった from a Japanese seller on ebay. There's still quite a lot of her vinyls on ebay, and I assumed they are out of press which is why I wanted to get my favorite albums before they never appear again as vinyls. Yeah, Miyuki was so pretty back then! Well, she still honestly is, but I also wish her older albums would have more pictures in the booklets. I remember I read someone write that "Miyuki might not be pretty but she has -these talents- to compensate", and I was just awestruck. HOW is she not pretty? lol.

Regarding my profile picture, you never saw it because it doesn't exist! Haha. I'm half kidding. You're right, it's from はじめまして. I basically just took the picture on the vinyl I found on ebay, and photoshopped it to remove the text and other stuff on it because I thought that picture is so beautiful. http://imgur.com/a/ybbEC - this will explain it! It's not a 100% perfect job but I was rushing a bit near the end. I had no clue LOVE OR NOTHING was your first album, I'm sure it's really special just like みんな去ってしまった is to me! I really don't know where to watch her PVs either, so I kind of miss out on all that. And I had no clue that was the story, whoa. Explains why it was such a hit. But I did notice that the chorus is never the same! It's a really great song, especially now that I understand the story behind the lyrics. I like the cover, too. I kind of looked towards listening to that album just because of its cover. I do that sometimes, haha.

I had zero clue about the fact that all those albums included songs from 夜会! I thought it was weird she had three albums in a row called WINGS, and didn't know what was the thing with 日-WINGS and 月-WINGS because it looks like they are tightly connected being released on the same day with similar names and covers. Thank you so much for telling me that, especially before I actually got to listening to 10 WINGS! I would watch her 夜会's but I don't know where to get them. On Jpopsuki there are a few but they barely have a 1 seed. But I'll try to get all the ones that I can!

I quite like LOVE OR NOTHING. At first the album sounded like it would bore me, but on the second listen all of the songs started sounding a lot more interesting. I've only listened to it 3 and "a half" times but these are favorites so far: 空と君のあいだに, バラ色の未来, アンテナの街, てんびん秤, 流星, YOU NEVER NEED ME. Although the rest sounds good, too. 風にならないか especially, now that I think about it.

Ahh! The lyrics did give me the vibe that they are about freedom at certain parts, I was close! Haha. That it was inspired by the protests is very interesting. The only parts that made me think it's a love song is "my heart belongs to that person", stressing that there's a person she's singing about. Especially because she says "hito". Even with knowing the backstory of the song, I still have no clue what she refers to exactly in those two lines in the verses. I mean, why choose to write "hito"? And lol, I'd also plagiarize the song how amazing it is, haha. And you're so right about 流浪の詩 and the fact that the melody doesn't match the lyrics. And I personally love those kinds of songs, which is why I also love うそつきが好きよ - which was one of the first songs I really fell in love with on that album. Oh, by the way, my みんな去ってしまった vinyl has just shipped today, I can't wait to get it! I finally decided to get my first Miyuki album and I decided that this was definitely it.

Wow, okay, you definitely made me want to re-listen to 南三条 which I totally will do. With keeping that story in mind and listening to lyrics more intently, maybe it grows on me, too. I love noticing how some of her songs sound similar to one another. I mean, generally this is not such a great thing but I don't mind it with Miyuki because it's not like she has tons of songs which sound really similar. 雨月の使者's chorus for example really reminds me of 笑わせるじゃないか. Sometimes when I'm listening to Miyuki I think of tons of stuff I want to tell you or ask, but whenever I write I mostly can't remember them, haha. Anyway, I wanted to ask how do you feel about LOVE OR NOTHING? What's your favorite album that she made in the 90s but after 時代 -Time goes around-?
操作

Aloysiana
Regarding the meaning of 南三条 - yes, please do tell! Any info that might not be apparent on her songs is always welcome. I'm still SO glad you told me the story behind エレーン because otherwise I never would have even guessed it! Regarding 南三条 though, it doesn't really captivate me somehow. But regarding the other songs on 歌でしか言えない, my favorites are definitely 炎と水, おだやかな時代, サッポロSNOWY and た・わ・わ. Songs like Maybe and pretty much most of the others songs are okay but nothing mind blowing. I do like them though. Overall it was a nice album. I guess I'll first write about the albums I listened to recently and then answer your questions. So, the song EAST ASIA is pretty much one of the best songs I've ever heard. I mean oh my god those verses. Haha. But the entire thing is written fantastically. I'm not sure if I get the lyrics completely though - the verses sound like there are elements on love but the chorus is about "east asia". Lol I'm so bad at figuring her lyrics out.

Other songs I loved on EAST ASIA are やばい恋 (just love the way she sings it, the lyrics and the way it sounds all together) and 此処じゃない何処かへ. Although this song really sounds a lot like はじめまして and the similar songs she has. I know 糸 is popular, but I expected it to be better. I can't even remember it to be honest. It might be a fault that I didn't really focus all too much (which is bad because her lyrics are really where her songs shine) while listening to these slow songs, sometimes I can be really lazy when listening to new stuff I don't like melodically at first. I do like the sound of ジェラシー・ジェラシー, although it's missing something to really be good somehow. I wish the part of the fast paced chorus repeated more. I didn't expect to enjoy 時代 -Time goes around- as much as I do. I really like all of the songs, and I love listening to it as a whole even if it's more like a re-make/compilation thing. I even like the slow ver. of 孤独の肖像.

And goshhh, I love the remake of 流浪の詩! Even the long あたし時々おもうの is fun to listen to somehow. Mostly only in the context of the album, though. The album reminded me how awesome 時代 is, too. Okay, so that's all I wanted to say on the "new" stuff (it's a lot I know). As for her first two album. Well, I admit some of it comes from the fact that all/most of the songs are really short. It's like a collection of short stories which doesn't have to bore you with waay too long sections which don't do much for some listeners like me. And the songs themselves are IMO really interesting and melodic. みんな去ってしまった has this overall special feeling I've never really experienced with another album. Which I don't think I can explain. 彼女の生き方 IS my favorite! Everything about it is great. It's like she's laying down these feelings so honestly that it's too beautiful and painful at the same time. And you're right with that Yuming comparison, it's exactly what I thought!
操作

Aloysiana
Okay, I'm getting carried away so I'll try to keep short. Still regarding her second album - I love songs like トラックに乗せて and 流浪の詩 because they both, one in a darker tone and other in a ligther, give a image of wandering somewhere and letting go of everything. Probably only song I don't like as much in that album is 忘れられるものならば. I do like the album version of 時代 the most, that's true. I just feel it sounds its best in that minimalist sound. As I said, it feels more raw and powerful that way to me. What I like about 私の声が聞こえますか is that each song has great melody and they are just generally more interesting to listen to. Although from that album my favorite is probably ひとり遊び - the way she brings the feeling of loneliness through that song, although very short, is incredible. Also songs like 歌をあなたに and 海よ are too beautiful. I agree with you on her vocals, I did notice a big difference and I'm liking it either way. It would be a bit boring if she stuck with same way of singing too long.

I had no clue about what you wrote regarding 吹雪! You really know so much about her songs, and seeing how large her discography is that's very impressive to me. So, 夜を往け. I didn't like the first track initially, but now I find it okay. Favorite is definitely 君の昔を - I love the lyrics. I don't generally like to explain why because it always feels too personal somehow - but that song clicked with me mostly because of its lyrics. Second favorite is 新曾根崎心中 - I don't think I have to explain that as you already figured out that I love these kinds of songs from her. ふたりは was really interesting to listen to due to the lyrics. Anyway, next favorite is 北の国の習い. It reminds me of 小石のように which I loved. With is okay, nothing special.

Oh! One more thing I wanted to tell you. I honestly think her best albums were her first two. I don't know why exactly, but they feel so special and different from all her other albums. I enjoyed グッバイガール somewhat. Favorite song is 吹雪. 回帰熱 however I barely can remember the songs although I've almost heard each 10 times. I do like あり、か, ロンリー カナリア and くらやみ乙女. Also 春なのに. But the rest is barely memorable. To be honest I enjoyed her previous albums better. I guess it's because I mostly pay attention to music itself?

That really does make sense and I can't believe I never thought of that! Actually, I guess I was confused because I didn't know what "cleansing cream" was referring to in the first place, somehow make-up never crossed my mind (might be because I don't do make-up, lol). I appreciate it as well. After listening to the album a few times in the row I can say it's a pretty enjoyable to listen to as a whole. And I really like 仮面 - musically it has such a different feel from everything else on the album, it sounds quite happy, and I really love how relaxed the chorus sounds and its melody in general - although the lyrics are not exactly "happy". グッバイガール sounds like something to look forward to. Thank you; I like having a perspective on what to expect to some degree as I move through her discography - and it's really valuable to have someone to ask questions and share thoughts about her music. So yeah, thanks for always answering!

I also felt that クレンジング クリーム and 黄色い犬 were too long. Although I do enjoy 黄色い犬 somewhat - I just wish it was shorter. I don't even know what クレンジング クリーム is supposed to be about, any ideas? I find 36.5℃ a welcome change to spice her discography up - and it's just a very enjoyable album with more than a few amazing songs - although I do see why you feel the way you do about it. I wonder how do you feel about グッバイガール? Which album do you think is the best among her next few after 中島みゆき?

I kind of did suspect there really would be no song quite alike that one, it's so special after all. 僕たちの将 is so exceptional, too! I wonder what inspired her to write both songs like that in that period. I like how Miyuki expresses the feeling of "never being worthy enough to be loved" - I find that she does an incredible job in nailing that feeling specifically. I'm not sure if I know of any other Japanese artist who can do it that well. Sure, there are instances even in modern Jpop with lyrics with that theme, but they are never as expressive. The only artist who I can think of right now is Miliyah - but her lyrics are a lot more straightforward. Anyway, I'm looking forward to 36.5℃ because somehow weirdly I have a feeling I'll like it, but we'll see.

You're right. Thank you for that tip. I find that ノスタルジア sounds really similar to はじめまして, although I prefer the latter by far. Anyway, miss M. is quite an enjoyable album. I wanted to ask you, does she at any point in her discography have a song like 春までなんぼ? I think it might be my favorite by her, although I can't be sure yet of course. It's just such a special song to me. I'll listen to 36.5℃ soon, I think I'm done with miss M. for now.

It's ironic that you can't remember "忘れてはいけない", haha. I find that song to be a bit boring, honestly. 熱病 on the other hand is very fun and interesting to me. A question I waned to ask: Since you seem to be so good at Japanese, do you maybe know what "パリカリ" means? I've heard it in two, maybe three songs so far - and could never find out what it means. I think I've searched everywhere and no results. It's even in the title of one of lecca's songs, "女パリカリ". I'm not 100% sure, but I also think I can hear the background vocals in Nakashima's CANDY GIRL say the exact same word, unless I'm hearing them wrong and they're maybe saying "カリカリ" or alike, there's nothing in the lyrics but clearly they're saying either パリカリ or something else. This is one of the most mysterious words to me that I've heard. And I'm hoping it wasn't something obvious all along and I just never managed to put 2 and 2. lol.

I'm glad if I can be of any help at all. I think you won't have a problem when it comes to connecting your DAC/Amp, depending on what kind it is, but generally most support connecting both to any kind of PC through USB, and also to iphone through line in. Also, you can connect most to your speakers too. So because most are connectable this way, it will be very easy. You can find portable DACs for your iPhone if you want - it's not a problem. Only thing to consider here is whether you'll find it convenient to carry another iPhone sized (or larger) item together to play your music. If portability isn't going to be a problem you can get a desktop DAC/Amp. The upside is that you can have a separate Amp which is going to perform a lot better than simply having a DAC. So, in this kind of way choosing what you need can be complicated. Honestly, I'd recommend borrowing or going to a store to try out a DAC yourself together with your current headphones.
操作
回复
-
Aloysiana
Why? Because you have to first judge yourself is it even worth it for you to spend your money on something like this. Hi-Fi is a very expensive hobby and if you want $500 headphones, you WILL have to spend more than that to drive those headphones properly. So if you're serious about this - just go to a store if you can and try it out for yourself. You'll know what it is and what it sounds like and whether you think it's worth it or not. One other thing to help clear out the difference between DAC/Amp: all DACs have amplifiers in them, just like with anything that can play audio; Amps however can be bought without a DAC, if that makes sense, but do need a DAC to be able to play music. This is nothing different from how our PCs or iPhones play music - They all have both a DAC and an Amp inside because they are necessary to play digital music. The reason you want another DAC/Amp is because you need better ones, simply put. Just trying to clear that up so you know what you're dealing with.

Wow, sorry for making that so long. Thanks for the description of what to expect in Miyuki's discography. I think that for now I'll have to put her on "hold" because so many of my favorite artists have released albums recently. And thank you so much for linking me to that site! I've been looking exactly for that. I was surprised that the second track was written by Tokunaga. The song after that one reminds me of her songs from DIAMOND WAVE album. But yeah, I'm disappointed that there's no Aika Ohno or Giorgio. And generally with the new writers. Great pun by the way, haha.

And also - everything you wrote about not being a bass person, to it being useful to having noise cancelling headphones, etc - all that stuff really matters when you finally decide to choose your headphones. And those are only a few things. As I said, it can be quite complicated to choose the right headphones and both what to play them through - but if you generally have an idea of what you want it should make things easier. Okay, I'll shut up now, haha.

Seeing as the HD 598 themselves would benefit from a good DAC/Amp, if you want anything better than those headphones then I'm afraid that a good external DAC/Amp would also be necessary. More high end headphones require more power to drive them. For example, you said that you can spend up to about $500 - and for that money you could easily get the HD 700 (if we take Senns to comapre), but they would be practically useless if you'd just plug them into your computer and call it a day. Firstly you won't be able to get much volume and they will sound too quiet, and secondly they will sound flat and won't bring out any potential that you actually paid for. It's possible they'd sound worse than lower impedance headphones (like the HD 598) if you drive them through only your PC soundcard (or iPod, whatever). But anyway, tell me what do you listen to your HD 598s on first, then I could probably help you more. Btw. you have the same headphones as OJS48kenkyuusei (whom I recommended them)!

After so many years of waiting I thought the release was underwhelming. Though I really want to see who wrote the songs. Also, the album kind of lacks identity to me, if that makes sense. About buying Miyuki's material - yes! I definitely do want to. But for now, probably the only stuff I would buy would be the used vinyls. Because you can't really get them on CDJ or any other shop as far as I know. But I do want to eventually get her albums on CDs, too. But I think I would focus on that when/if I move out and have a place where I can actually store all of my albums. Ahh, I did hear you guys do have places like that in America - I was always so jealous of that! It would be unimaginable to see a similar place here. I agree with the point on Miyuki's vocals. I remember when I heard her singing for the first time I was SO blown away. I remember thinking "yes, yes, this is great!", haha. The first album I listened to was みんな去ってしまった, which will probably always be my favorite for that reason - I remember just listening to the lyrics and images would just come in my head so naturally. Oh, I wanted to ask you one thing regarding one of her songs and the lyrics. In 彼女の生き方 - the following line "浮気女と 呼ばれても 嫌いな奴には 笑えない" - what do you think the last part is supposed to mean? I did think about the fact that it's maybe not as unusual to run into you again unknowingly because, well, we both listen to Jpop. But then again - there's so many international Jpop fans out there which makes this kind of situation significantly less likely. I guess it would never happen if I didn't stumble upon Miyuki and wanted to listen to her. That's really kind of you - I'm sure I would be interested to see the translations of those albums, especially since they are official. But in any case, I should probably apologize too because of some of the things I did (posting the negative feedback when I couldn't get in contact with you right away, for example). I guess that was one of the reasons I was writing that blog in my own language - but really, almost no one visits it, haha. There have been a few good comments from people, but talking to them never really amounted to anything. I'm pretty sure that I'm probably the only person who even knows about Miyuki for example, in my entire country. It's just so hard to imagine anyone knowing about especially more obsucre Jpop artists. There are people who know about some more famous acts and know about Jpop, of course, but it's still such a small amount of people you'd probably never meet them here. はじめまして is really great. The cover is probably my favorite actually! And I love the first track, last track, ひとり (what you mentioned about the lyrics is true!), 彼女によろしく, 僕たちの将来, and the two songs I previously mentioned. 春までなんぼ is magnificent, though. We've been talking all this time and never knowing I have your previously owned CDs in my room. Yeah, I've heard some bad things about USPS packages from people who've ordered here. But it only mostly happens with stuff from USPS, not any other place or country we order from. In fact I've never even gotten broken jewel cases before. So who knows how they were handling the package. I remember all those long unpleasant messages we've had to sent, but only at first. I still remember how I couldn't send you a message about that issue because your inbox was full, and I was so angry at that point, haha. Yeah, to clarify - the number 500 refers to the total play number of all songs combined on the album, I'm not sure that I was really clear about that in my previous shout. And I did write reviews, but they're all in my native language. I have a blog but I stop writing in it for years, then continue, but now I'm not writing. And I don't really get sick of them - I do sometimes feel impatient to listen to other things, but I like to focus on one or two albums at a time. I usually take one month for each album, and it's enough time to listen to it that much or more. Focusing on a certain artist and their discography is what I like to do. For Miyuki, I decided that 100 would be the total number of plays minimum before moving on, but as you see, I listen to the albums to around 150 plays or more each. Oh, I've listened to はじめまして and while I'm not as impressed, it's a quite different album. シニカル・ムーン and 春までなんぼ sound the best to me so far.

Actually, you remind me of someone who I bought from a few years ago. After reading your message, maybe you really are the same person (although you'd probably notice my username before if you really are the same person). I bought about 6 Mai albums from an American seller, and the seller was even kind enough to include a free single. But the cases arrived cracked which was really bad for me seeing as I can't find fitting cases to buy where I live easily. But in the end everything was fine because I did manage to find the cases and now I'm really happy I bought them. But truthfully I would not buy anything from America again because of the expensive, slow and clearly unreliable shipping from USPS. And I often wonder about sellers and the issues they face. Because ebay and paypal favor the buyers more often than not. And you never know what kind of person is the buyer, and you can never know for sure if the packages arrived or not unless they are tracked. I can imagine it's stressful.

Thanks for the advice, I think you might be right that it'd be better that way. My usual way of going through discographies is even more "forced" - I'd usually listen to an album minimum 500 times altogether (all tracks) before moving on to another on. Reason being because I want to really get to like all of the songs or at least most - because that's what my experience has always been with music. Give it enough time and you'll be surprised that a song you listened to 20 times and always though was boring suddenly becomes your favorite. And mostly I just want to really remember the album and give it its own listening time. For Miyuki I chose different "rules", of course, because of her vast discography. But I think that I'll definitely be coming back to the albums I didn't like as much and give them another try.

Yeah, I guess we'll never know that regarding Mai. In any case, I really like her vocals and think she's a great singer (not perfect, but it's not like she's the only singer with vocal problems here and there). Ahh, yeah, I've looked into getting stuff from Yahoo Japan Auctions (it can be so cheap, right?), but it turns out it would be almost as expensive to try to buy from there because of where I live. So the only option is ebay, especially if they offer cheap shipping which they sometimes do. There is one seller in particular where I was able to get good quality CDs for only $7 US. Oh, and I wondered about your Miyuki collection; do you own everything in CD or vinyl format? Or mixed? I definitely want to get at least one of her vinyls. Oh, and thanks - I'm not from a native English speaking country but I am in Europe. Croatia, to be specific.

Oh my, I had no clue she even wrote the song inspired from a real event. And such a grisly one! Thank you for telling me, now the lyrics finally make a lot more sense to me. The change in her lyrics you mention sure does sound interesting, and I am sooo curious and excited to listen to her later albums. Every and each album I listened to until now has surprised me in this way or another, and there was always something special about each. I'm so glad I gave her a chance and now have firmly decided that I'll listen to all of her albums and b-sides. It will take me a while, but it's such an amazing musical journey that I don't mind putting other artists' discographies aside. So she hasn't been married and didn't have children? Yeah, I wonder how she feels about it, too. But it's probably true when you say music is her true love - with so many songs written (and with tons of them being amazing songs) she sure did leave a big mark and will probably be remembered forever.

You know, that's what I found odd too. I know I watched her perform 儚さ once (don't remember which performance) and I anticipated to see what would happen during the bridge part; I really wondered whether she can actually sing those high notes. But I was letdown because she sang them an octave lower, just like you said. So I really don't know what's the deal with that or whether she can really sing them - or maybe she can but it's just a bit too risky and difficult to do it live? I guess it's easier to do in studio and re-record if she fails. But live it would be too much of a risk because she can't hit the high notes so easily? Oh, where do you buy the used goods from? I would do that but the only place is ebay and they never really put the newly released used stuff there.

No, I have not heard the story behind エレーン! I'd love to hear it; so far I could only speculate what it's really about. For me, hearing any Miyuki song for the first time and listening closely to lyrics is really fun and immersive. But if the song's lyrics and it's arrangement and melody don't do anything for me, it's just hard to imagine myself putting these songs on repeat. But I guess in that way, her music is different which is a good thing. But it's less about the length for me personally (after all, I do love both 異国 and エレーン which are 9 and 8 minutes long), and more about the song itself and what it's offering to me as a listener. Oh, one other thing that sometimes bothers me about Miyuki's music is that it's really rare for her to write (as I've noticed so far) about anything else but the ugly side of love, lol. So I can't imagine listening to her music exclusively for a longer period of time. It would just get to me in a bad way.

I actually wanted to ask you that - has she ever been married? Does she have kids? Because I can't find this kind of information anywhere. I guess she's another one of those artists who likes to protect her privacy, and I actually really like that because I'd probably want the same thing if I was in their place, so it's understandable to me.

Oh yeah! I was actually very surprised when I heard 儚さ and the high notes she hits during the bridge. For a while I wasn't even sure it was her voice. Speaking of her vocals, I'm really glad to hear you say that she has a good voice. I always thought so too, but usually wherever I'd read reviews of her albums or if people were mentioning her, they'd say that her voice isn't all that great. And I had a case with my friend, where he thought Mai's high notes were all computer made and that her singing was so fake, lol. I don't know why Mai's vocals didn't sit with him well. I also love her title tracks! I considered preordering her new album (seeing as I own all her studio albums so far), but I think I'll wait to hear the songs first.

As for Miyuki's discography; I was really surprised by how good 予感 is. I could even go as far as calling it my favorite after みんな去ってしまった, but I can't really say that yet. It does sound different from what she did before, and I like every single song it. Which is a first for me with her albums. ファイト! is exceptional. 生きていてもいいですか was really special. The two last songs on that album are for me probably two of her best songs. I loved おかえりなさい, too. As you can tell, I can't get enough of 追いかけてヨコハマ, but other songs on it are really good too. One problem I have with some of her albums is when they tend to include really long songs that don't have a memorable melody or anything interesting happening in them except for the lyrics. Sometimes, even the lyrics alone cannot save a song for me. Songs like バス通り, 友情, 夜曲, and 根雪 for example are like that for me. I also noticed I don't really like あ・り・が・と・う that much as an album overall. I only like the first 3-4 songs.

Also, I've noticed she has quite a few songs that are really similar to わかれうた. Like おもいで河, かなしみ笑い and ひとり上手. Did she (or her label?) want to recreate the success that the original had? Oh, I have to mention that songs like あした天気になれ, and the b-side 笑わせるじゃないか are especially great to me and stand out.
