You're always teetering precariously on the edge of pretension with Animal Collective, especially if you listen to the opinions of self-important bloggers. That may be why I shied away from them in the past. But as someone who only got into their old stuff in the past year, I'd say its their most accessible album so far...but I have only given it one proper listen... In short, I like it. Think its probably their best and most complete album, but then I'm not avidly knowledgeable about them.

Sadly the emo-black-metal-shoegazer genre is rather sparse. Check out Amesoeurs though, side project from Neige (the man behind Alcest). They have an EP Ruines Humaines (of which I own the vinyl and CD of course) and a recent split album with Valfunde.
