An Evening with Rush

The grin still permeates my face, a week later. It was uplifting to say the least.

The venue in Regina is quite intimate, and the approx. 5,000 fans (sold out venue) were very responsive to the legendary band.

It was a real thrill rocking out with my 19 year old son and my 21 year old daughter to "2112/Temples of Syrinx" and many other great Rush songs. "Temples of Syrinx" is my ringtone and was a defining Rush song from my youth.

The first Rush abum I bought at the age of 16 was "2112" in 8-track form ... LOL!

There were people of all ages, all races and both sexes. It was not just air drummers and old guys as I often hear. I was very proud of the people at the concert, who behaved and got up off their butts and paid homage.

My daughter was surprised how hard rocking the band was. She particularely enjoyed the "Workin' them Angels" song off S&A, which is one of her theme songs, and "The Larger Bowl" which is a little used form of literary writing known as a "pantoum". She is working on a literary degree at the U of R.

I thought that the 9 songs played off of the new album were very well performed and received. The band seemed to enjoy playing them also.

A neighbor of ours also came to the show with us. He was impressed and really got into "Freewill" that saw Alex Lifeson aboulutely scorch his guitar ... as the video screen behind him showed a closeup of Alex ...... and the band absolutely nailed the song.

The instrumentals and drum solo were amazing as well.

If you ever get a chance to see them live, please don't hesitate, but do your homework first as they have a back catalogue of 19 studio albums to date, with phenomenal lyrics that don't seem to get enough noteriety for their profound insight and socialy relevant point of view.

Their overall musicianship is amazing and the audio/visual extravaganza that surrounded them was truly profesional, encorporating their diversified sense of humour.

Some freinds of my daughter asked me how I liked the show. I said in full conviction, "It was a long overdue thrill of a lifetime!"

It was 28 years sice they played in our city.

I would see them again in a heartbeat!
