Man, that Drake drama was weird, I remember hearing about it when it first happened. I was a very new fan of Spalding when that grammy nomination was announced, I guess it would have been 2010, and even I was convinced with the rest of the world that either Drake or Bieber would win. It just seemed like they nominated a jazz person as a courtesy. I don't know why he felt the need to call her out like that. They both have 5 grammys now, I'm not totally sure what the big deal was.

Yeah, I feel like if I give her more time I will connect with the record more, as the title track and Her Light are some of her best songs imo. And since we are speaking of Arabic music, I'd like you to recommend the duo 'Syzygys' that i've listened to recently. They are kind of a weird amalgamation of various types of world music, electronic instrumentals and j-pop, working with a microtonal organ. Definitely very left field with it's characteristics. I gave a listen to their complete recordings album which also came out on John Zorn's label and loved it all the way, so perhaps you'll find something to enjoy there too. I think Drake had a fear of the unknown in some sense when encountering jazz music and it terrified him that someone who doesn't work in the mainstream genres could take 'his' award.

I'll check out Syzgys soon, it definitely sounds like something I'll appreciate, thanks. I've discovered lots of stuff from Zorn's label that sounds almost nothing like him or his jazz influences that ended up being really good. And yeah, I guess Drake felt entitled to the award for more celebrity-based reasons and just couldn't accept the fact that someone outclassed him, musically speaking. When he can improvise a vocal melody and then improvise a separate bassline simultaneously, then he can demand a revote.
