I really think late-era Scorn will get reevaluated higher for its starkness. Plan B is pretty tops with "Boss" and "The Snow Hill" on it. I wonder if Mick might decide to do more Lull-type stuff. I could see him being tired of his Scorn phase the same way he got tired of all the blast beats from Napalm Death. The weird spareness of his later stuff points to interesting possibilities.

Hey, if you haven't checked them out yet, I'd definitely look into Raime and Andy Stott. Both seem to have gone beyond dubstep and back to the ambient dub we all love and remember. Really minimal, thick stuff. Both released new albums this year but they have a lot of older EPs as MP3s on Amazon.

Check out this interview with VS: http://www.spin.com/blogs/last-step-going-sleep-make-music-sleep in particular this part: "I felt at the time it was so far from what I'd been releasing as Venetian Snares, it should really be its own thing. It's not, though, obviously; everything I make is me. I've got a few aliases still that nobody has caught me on." Hmm, I wonder what those could be?

Ask and ye shall receive: new Last Step out of tracks he's been making while falling asleep. He really seems to be the sort of guy I'd like to see a documentary on about his process of making stuff. It almost sounds like he's taken the Oblique Strategies cards and then completely rewritten the rules on them.

The acidiness of them made me think something Laststep era (tho "Flashforward" on Detrimentalist is very similar in that vein too). I keep hearing RDJ has an album complete but since that's been forever who knows how true it is. And now we're also years gone from a full BoC album, where there too was a rumor of all of their earlier stuff getting rereleased :(

Thanks for the hookup. I've been all over the place in stuff recently: girl group garage from the 60's, ska Beatles covers. But arcoplane has some neat stuff. Electromeca is another one I found there from a Mutant Sniper breakcore comp. Also if your into a lo-fi rock album, EMA's is pretty good. :)

Thanks for the headsup on Scorn! Yeah, I've been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith which probably isn't good for anyone's mindstate but, you know: "gutters and strikes" (c) Lebowski. I'm going to the UK for a week starting on the 11th with the hope of doing some record shopping for stuff we can't get over here (e.g. Shut Up and Dance's album with the Eurythmics sample). Couriering vinyl across the ocean is better than the 25EUR I spent to get a 10EUR LP shipped from the Dutch :D

Yeah, this Wagawaga is pretty tight. In the label of things, I think this (along with Boxcutter et al) is really moving back to what 'IDM' had stood for for a long time: an eclectic mix of all kinds of previous styles transposed in fantastic ways. Even classic RDJ is all cheeky reinterpretiations of acid and D&B. Of course folks never like labels that aren't 'street' enough... so that's why everyone is running towards Funky or whatever. But I'm still fine calling it good ol' IDM :) (and I think jazz samples are highly underutilized).

Just saw this on the Earache blog: http://askearache.blogspot.com/2009/10/scorn-re-issues-2-x-cd-box-is-out.html. I'm kinda surprised that those discs are out of print. I guess I thought they'd always be a small/growing market for it. Of course I'm still waiting for them to reissue Sweet Tooth on CD so maybe I have no sense of the market :P

Hey, last month I finally heard Snares' "Moonglow/Bitter Earth" 7"... I was blown away. Some future jazz jungle monstrosity. It's kinda like what he did with Billie Holiday on the Hungarian album but less classical and more uptempo. I went online and found that the only other release of his like that is "Badminton" which I had to buy via discogs 'cause no one has a for-sale digital copy. Oh well, more vinyl :D

Thanks for the headsup! It's interesting that after a ~6 year quiet spell Mick has decided on this current approach. I'm used to him being hyperprolific with albums so its interesting seeing him go the single route (which has me excited since it lets folks think more in 'one-off' ways).

Man, I finally got Tino Vols 1,2 and 6... the Halloween Dubs one is classic! All bassy, dubbed out, goofy... it makes me wish out of the whole Dubstep scene (which I guess has been superseded by new genres I don't understand: UK Funky? WTF?) so many of the artists weren't so humorless.

I kind of hope Barry can get most of the tracks released as 12"/digital singles. I really liked "Something with M in it" and "Windfall" previously, both which where 2:50min songs. I thought he was trying out interludes sort of like BoC. He succeeded at making an "album" but I think his tracks are interesting enough to warrant full A-side extended treatments. I wonder how much stuff he has lying around since the Hobbs disc had Kab 27. Even if all the stuff is unfinished, I'd dig someone throwing together a comp ala "Balancing Lakes". That MBM EP sounds interesting, but it'd be down in my queue after the early BoC discs. Knowing my luck, they'll reissue it right after I buy it :P

I avoided the new Boxcutter until I could listen to it from front to end and I think that was the best way because I think its best as a continuous mix. The samples and choices seem to bind the songs together in to a coherent theme. It's got a bit of the nostalgic rave-iness of Zomby's disc and a bit of the post-Daft Punk/Justice electrohouse thing. But I really appreciate Barry's look to include 80's funk elements. There's the weird Cameo/Gap Band-style breakdowns in "Spacebass" and "Sidereal Day" that are outright groovy and no one else is doing that (in this way, I think he's more successful in his 80's interpolation than all the house bands out there). And its great that he's able to extend this into his style while maintaining all the bass-work and dub moments. I think "Otherside" is probably the best example: with its Augustus Pablo melodica, vocal samples (Culture?) and everything else. He doesn't break the 5 min barrier but that works in an album with a unified concept.

Just got "Filth" yesterday. Inside there's a postcard: 'I Want Aaron's 303'. Now *that's* a contest worth entering. Oh, the jams kicked out are something else too: like some acid hardcore (sort of like 'Flashforward' but more gabber) with some Amen breaks and... well, at this point it's probably easier to say its Aaron being Aaron :P

Boxcutter 12"? Hmmm... What label is putting it out? I'm wondering the probability it'll show up on Bleep at some time (or not). And definitely on the brothers angle... I was worried when BOC was in the Wire and one of them half-jokingly mentioned moving to Hong Kong with his girlfriend (?!?) And what about Rephlex? It almost looked like they were going to go 12 months without a single release.

Some headsup from the Planet-Mu site (new Snares and new Boxcutter! Sadly no Parsons LP yet): VENETIAN SNARES - Planet Mu breakcore veteran returns to Corsica for his only London show promoting his new album "Filth" (Planet Mu ZIQ222). BOXCUTTER - Blasting space-age funk and dub from his new album "Arecibo Message" (Planet Mu ZIQ225)
