wow, if I'm reading it correctly, you didn't like the Brandenburg concertos at first... which is funny to me since they are the only Bach works other than for the mighty D minor that I DID like from the first listen. ;-D

Yessss, Beethoven was really inspiring and still is actually. I just love him so much, but I've probably said that already xDD

Well my point was that, as a person, he wasn't always angry and that documentary didn't really show other sides of him so much. However, you are right about his music, that it says much about him. I read one book about impressionist artist Renoir and he said that he prefers listening Mozart to Beethoven, because he didn't want to know about Beethoven's stomach pain and personal problems because in his opinion that's what he's telling with his music, it's very personal in a way while Mozart is always rather cheerful and you don't hear any of his personal struggles in his music (which he had quite many as well). And I've never really heard any other composer who tells so much about himself through his music. Like in Moonlight sonata - in first movement you really hear how much he loved the woman he wrote that sonata for, while on 3rd movement you can hear how much frustration, passion and struggle there was inside of him at the same time. It's amazing and that's why I love him so much!

Sadly we can't see that in pictures, but people who remember him have said that he had a really great smile :)

And actually, the reason why he almost always looks angry on his pictures was because of his slight protruding lower lip. That would make almost anyone look angry :D And also because he hated to sit for the portraits and easily got distracted (and it also probably annoyed him).

Actually, that was the thing that I disliked the most - he looked TOO angry. Even for Beethoven :D They pictured him like always grumpy and mad about everything and on everyone, while in reality he wasn't like that. Sure, he did have rather tremendous and hard to get along character, but he also had really great sense of humour, he liked to joke and also was often in good spirits despite his deafness. It's more that he just had a certain opinion about certain people and if he didn't like someone then there was nothing to be changed, he was just unable to be nice with them. And then, he even changed his opinion about Napoleon several times from admiration, to hate and to kinda neutral opinion in the end. So he wasn't all grumpy and angry like it also looks from most of his pictures :D

Hey, and happy new year! :D Yes, I have seen it, even two times. It is rather great, thought Beethoven's portrayal is not always so accurate. Plus I don't like the actor who plays him :D But other than that it's good. :)

Haha :D Thanks for the recommendations, I might check something from that one day. About heavy metal? Hm, I've never been muh into that type of metal, but I consider Black Sabbath to be more doom metal than heavy metal. Anyway, you might try something from the new wave of British heavy metal like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. But there isn't much else I can recommend you from this genre :)

Saw your shout on Sviests4s's page, and since I've recently undertaken a quest to find a metal band I like I want to report on the result. I was beginning to think about giving up this quest when I heard a band called Skyclad. It is a metal band but one with folk influences and this is the one I recommend. I've only heard two albums thus far and my favorite is call Prince of the Poverty Line.

I don't think I could ever get tired of classical. And I've never heard anything from indie rock. Could you recommend something?

Well, I like symphony too, and then I also like all strings, so I would say string quartets then :)

And I keep meaning to mention that Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky is actually a film score for a movie - so if it seems rather disjointed, it is. I mainly thought of it in relation to the Gould comment about the long term aspect of music since the piece was written to illicit an immediate response and not one based on reason or contemplative thought. The movie concerns itself with a Teutonic invasion and the hero's (that being Prince Nevsky) efforts to repel the invaders. The movie was completed shortly after Nazi Germany had invaded the Soviet Union. Really, you can pick and choose freely with Prokofiev and you're likely to find something interesting... the Scythian Suite is another rousing piece by him and also Lieutenant Kije is a favorite of mine. Well anyway, I'm rambling... happy listening!

I also intend to re-evaluate baroque in addition to Schubert... and now that I think of it I do like the Brandenburg concertos and of course the toccata and fugue in d minor is as iconic a work as any. I have some flute concertos by Telemann that I like and Handel's water music... yes I intend to look into this some more. And I think I understand what you mean about a time warp... I get that feeling most particularly when listening to renaissance music (and for that matter) early 80's new wave! ;-D

Looking at your favorite classical works list I'm reminded how I've neglected Schubert! Really I've relegated him to being in Beethoven's shadow. I'm going to correct that now... actually the only work of his that I can say I'm at all familiar with is Winterreise which I do find quite moving. Well like I said I'm correcting that now. I'll tell you something else, JS Bach just leaves me cold... I won't argue his greatness but man do I have a hard time getting enjoyment from baroque style music. I've made a note to check out the Bach pieces you have listed.

We were invaded by Spain in 1521, then we speak spanish, but many people speaks local languages, for example maya, nahua, zoque, mixe, etc, we have a lot of ethnical groups. Our food is delicious, really delicious!!! some traditional examples are mole, enchiladas, chilaquiles, carnitas, tamales,...mmm...etc (i´m hungry now haha) most of people are catholics, soccer is the most famous sport, we have a huge and impresionant natural richest and variability, sea, islands, mountains, lakes, rivers, canyons, volcanos, etc. Our women are pretty, we enjoy beer and music and dance!!! Salsa, cumbia, banda, norteño, are some local rythms...you must come to visit this marvelous country to discover many things more
