well, check out some norwegian classics if you haven't yet, early Immortal and Gorgoroth are alot cloned by raw bm bands. even early Dimmu Borgir works for me, for more obscure try Kvist, Odium, Obtained Enslavement, 90's symphonic with great atmosphere. was pretty much the same in my school too..and school and entrance exams are typically like that anyway, except iitjee and the like of course..i was/am never a teacher or school dependent student, so it didnt matter to me much in learning stuff..also, you need to stop using the word "sums" and say problems instead :P we aren't 5 yr old kids anymore :P goldstein is a killer book.

:P yeah as i'd told you, when i checked out kleppner's book in my first yr at iitk (it was deemed as the main text for the 1st sem phy course there that every student of every dept has to do), i too was wishing if only i'd come to know of that book by myself/internet or by someone else during my high school days...it's really v.good..pretty sure i'd be telling my students in future to try it out for mechanics apart from goldstein, landau lifshitz vol-1, feynman and such classics.

oh, yeah i forgot you certainly should check out padmanabhan's gr book which is only a few years old in publication..havent studied anything from it myself but looks really good...right after learning some very basic special relativity from any book whatsoever, i think one should directly go on to this or weinberg's book (or for the one more inclined towards the formalism and the geometrical sophistication, see wald's book, for instance out of a hundred others, which is probably the most popular grad level gr book at least for those who want to get into GR or that kinda stuff..hawking-ellis' book also the same kind...padmanabhan's looks to be a somewhat less formalism-intensive version of these, a proper modern grad level book... of course, weinberg also has the math obviously but like i said, its focus isnt on the mathematics, it's on the physics)..it's a shame you dont have much interest in the quantum world so far..thats where almost all the intriguing and awesome shit happens.

the first year of iitk and would probably have been my favorite mechanics book in high school days if i'd known of its existence..i also highly recommend goldstein (grad level) for mechanics..for EM, out of million books i already mentioned griffiths' as i really like that one and really only followed that one..several special relativity books also discuss a good deal about maxwell's theory...irodov also had separate books on mechanics and EM though (not problems-book), and i loved both of them in my high school days and one of these 2 contains special relativity as well...there's a whole series (10 volumes) of the highly reputed, authoritative, one-of-the-favorited-and-frequented-by-pro-physicists "landau-lifshitz course of theoretical physics" books by the expert and god landau (vol-1 being mechanics which is a phenomenal book, haven't really studied much from any of the other volumes so far)...there's a pauli's series of lectures as well but i have never read anything from them.

i haven't read anything from hartle, schulz etc so i dont know about them..i just mentioned those as they are among the most popular undergrad level books...weinberg's in a grad level, not undergrad...and since you seem to be more interested in the mathematics side of all this, you may not like weinberg's...misner, thorne and wheeler is a seasoned GR theorist's book..it has too much stuff in too much detail..i dont suppose any one in the world uses it to learn GR from for the first time, unless he has no other thing to do/learn/study...i dunno what you mean by saying feynman, hcv and irodov should prepare you for starting with gr ? feynman has only a small physically descriptive feelingful/conceptual chapter on GR, and nothing of the sort, not even special relativity, in hcv and irodov....maybe you should ditch hcv and just pick up klepner's mechanics book and learn or revise stuff from there, this book also has special relativity..it's a v.good book that i came to know about only in

"high school physics is basically just like prep school. opens up and starts training your mind to some basic things" << of course, what i mean is, if you and your mind hadnt already realised you liked physics type of things by then and hadnt already naturally opened up towards the idea of learning and loving physics type of things...but then, even if one has been into the physics side of science (by feeling and inclination and fascination but doesnt really know much shit) for years before high school and already realised how naturally attracted one is to it, high school physics will still open and train such a student's mind up, assuming he takes the effort to try to finally start taking steps towards real physics (which typically starts happening in high school, or beyond)..okay, enough about the psychology..

decide if you want clarity in understanding the physics (ideas and concepts) more or mathematical rigor...decide if you are more a physicist or more a mathematician (in which case those indirect, intuitive, insightful, sometimes even controversial, way of thinking physics would make you give up all hope and respect for physicists, or increase the respect for them in admiration of such non-trivial, insightful, brilliant, dynamic, spontaneous and non linear way of thinking as opposed to what a typical 'good' mathematician does) with some inclination towards things that actually happen in nature or who takes physics as a mathematical exercise..this inner mentality will decide what you like more, how you like it, how you think about stuff and so on, and your book (and even subject) preferences will be according to that...it doesn't take 6-7 years to learn GR...if you do all this sincerely and steadily/continously at a decent pace of learning, won't even take a year or so. really.

start getting into general theory of relativity...for books, well, any book out of the million for newtonian mechanics..same for special relativity..for EM theory, look at griffith's (an undergrad level book) relevant chapters for instance..any book that has talked a good deal on maxwell's theory in good generality (has kept the time dependent terms, those terms are of course where interesting shit happens, from where the whole relativity thing took birth in einstein's and others' minds) and also special cases..then take one of the million GR books..to begin with, maybe hartle or schulz or something..i have never studied any of those..weinberg's GR book is highly physical (as opposed to most grad level GR books that is full of mathematical sophistication, most of which is not necessary unless one directly wants to jump into research) and my favorite (Well the only one i actually read haha)..

anyway, sorry for the boasts and rants instead of answering your questions..before answering them, i'd like to know if your primary or main intention is to learn just GR ? in that case, you can neglect the whole quantum side of physics..quantum mechanics and its consequences in nature is relevant to a pure general relativist only when he concerns himself with issues of an extremely huge mass localized at a very very small amount of space-time, the regime of quantum gravity, which of course is one of the most challenging issues and fundamental goals in all of science..till then, a pure GR person (meaning someone who doesnt care about or take interest in anything outside of classical gravity) doesnt even need to know quantum world exists...you can just brush up some newtonian classical mechanics, special relativity and maxwell's theory of electromagnetism (do special relativity before this to really get to the point of maxwell, lorentz, poincare, einstein (etc)'s take on EM), and then

and yeah, feynman lectures..definitely...whatever high school level stuff he talked about in those undergrad lectures, yeah that's where you'll see almost all of whatever real physics there is to high school level physics..to be honest, the only book one should read when in high school..truly a book for the physics lover who truly loves to think and think hard and deep, and takes pleasure in not just doing his own deep thinking (if one is capable enough to do that..highly nontrivial a quality), but in seeing how awesome feynman's fucking brain was..discovered the book at the end of 11th, and i spent 60-70 % of my 12th almost entirely glued to that book (was addicted really, not exaggerating), even ahead of boards and iitjee and all that and neglected iitjee for straight 6-7 or so months (just used to appear on those fiitjee test series, that constituted the whole of my iitjee efforts in those 6-7 months, and even that i did primarily because i liked trying out the test questions). :D

didn't you ask the same questions one or so year ago ? :P what happened that time hehe ? you are literally back to high school books (hc verma) ? you really think you need to do that though ? high school physics is basically just like prep school. opens up and starts training your mind to some basic things but needn't be done every time you want to get back to learning stuff..there's not much physics in standard high school physics so to speak, and whatever there is it's too elementary for a seasoned electrical engineer like yourself to go back to it again and again..totally not necessary imo..different story though if you are doing the feynman lectures (good for life) or trying to solve some really really good problems (though the latter will just prep and re lubricate your mind because let's face it there isn't much 'physics' at that level, but it's the 'physics' kind of thinking that is utterly imp, so yeah solve them irodov or olympiad problems)...once is enough for the most part..

I am teaching at the undergraduate level. Subject is Child Development. Yeah, I enjoy teaching, and discussing/sharing ideas with the students. Actually we discuss whole range of topics from psychological to sociological to political issues in class. Its awesome, the kind of liberty I get to speak and interact with the students- and expand my world view. :)
