Salute, if you love the music of Dmitri Shostakovich and you have it somewhere in the top of your charts, you're invited to the Shostakovich-group: http://www.last.fm/group/Shostakovich+l+%D0%A8%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87+l+Schostakowitsch?setlang=en with best regards, П.

In a way they are a bit overrated. I admit they have very beautiful pieces, but i don't listen to like half of their work. You definitely should check out some post-rock, if classic is your stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bAUK-aoqt8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4KJqb0mRjE&feature=related and here some classic ambient work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XprEMADIMp8&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHjKQcjL0sk&feature=related

Hey..Yeah I've been listening to a lot of Bach lately. Goldberg variations is a funny one. It seems to be two different pieces when it is played on harpsichord and piano. I very much prefer Bach's keyboard music to be played on harpsichord though. Bach can be boring sometimes. But he wrote such large amount of music, and of course there are some less impressive ones. If you want to jump into Bach, there are three wonderful ways: the concertos (Brandenburg, Keyboard, and Violin concertos); the solo instrumental music (Goldberg variations, Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, and the Cello suites); and finally the choral music (St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, Mass in B minor). Not that I've listened to all of them, but there are certainly considered as Bach's finest pieces.

Yes, I was amazed the first time I heard the full symphony. Actually for quite a long period of time I was listening only to the last part, that was because I didn't start with the Ninth. Usually I listen at least 4-5 times to a piece before I get to love it. At least when I'm not paying it full attention. But after listening five-six times to a symphony I think I can understand a lot more of it and that's absolutely worth it.

Mmm I'm not surprised you haven't heard of them ... I'm listening to this compilation called Victrola Favorites: Artifacts From Bygone Days. Early recordings of bluegrass and Chinese opera and Persian drinking songs and stuff like that. Total mixed bag. Great fun. Yeah, the Nightingale's all about timbre. That Chinese March dazzles me everytime. Who recorded the version you're listening to?

Hey there! Happy new year, hope you're having a decent holiday. I fled to Australia for a month with the family, which bankrupted me a little bit, but on the upside I get some sunshine and warmth (33 degrees yesterday). Trying to get some uni work done but it's not really happening. I see it's -5 tonight in England ... those temperatures don't compute for me at all. -1 is about the lowest I've ever experienced. Ah yes. Much to look forward to. I recommend staying indoors and listening to Szymanowski. You're giving him a decent spin, I notice ...

Yeah it is fascinating, but I don't know much of it. I discovered Raymond Scott a couple of months ago - an ex-jazz band leader turned electronic pioneer, who formed "Manhattan Reserach Inc.", invented his own instruments (the "Clavivox", the "Electronium") and wrote electronic jingles for radio ads and soothing electronic sounds for infants. It's the biography I love most, I guess. As for the serious players, I'm fond of Varèse (for the Stravinskian primitivism buried in his high-tech experiments) but I've never heard a bar of Xenakis, for instance. If you know anything good ...

Nah, he's headed for a crazy landslide. He's too far ahead in the polls and the queues are too long at the booths for anything to go wrong now. A lot of mud has been thrown, but I think Obama's been too calm and too reasonable for any of it to stick. And remember he's got the funk on his side, too.

Just a best of album. Really enjoyable. Hammond organ grooves can be super cheesy but these guys pull it off. Green Onions is their signature tune, I'm sure you've heard it, but I can recommend getting a full album. Did it snow on you yesterday, BTW? It was a real novelty for me. This is my first northern hemisphere winter. And it's only October.

Yeah it's all about rhetoric and theatre mostly, but there were a couple of moments of substance, and the policy differences couldn't be starker. Palin was trying her hardest to be folksy. "When I talk to moms at soccer" &c. And saying "doggone" and winking a couple of times at the folks at home. Pronounced "nuclear" the way Bush does. "You guys opposed the surge." "Say it ain't so, Joe, there ya go again." "Oh man, it is so obvious I am a Washington outsider." I'm firmly in Obama's camp and I think Palin is scary/hilarious, so it was entertaining. No major incidents though. Actually Sly Stone was quite a good soundtrack for the whole thing. Especially the amazing track "Underdog". Those guys are awesome.
