hi! you asked for a tom waits album recommendation? well try some of his older "more normal" music like "the heart of the saturday night". i just cannot describe the genius of that album fairly enough :) and it's good enough for a start since it's not so...experimental? (: well i see people are mentioning rain dogs a lot. that's fine, but for me, real waits is "franks wild years".

I Agree with cowey, Rain Dogs is my favorite and I recomend it too x)

i usually rec rain dogs for people who are interested in waits, but it's a very folk/jazz-heavy album and you don't really seem to like that stuff judging by your charts... a straighter 'rock record' that shows his talent positively would be blood money, or you could get the asylum comp as others have suggested. hope my advice serves you well.

Rain Dogs is my personal favorite Waits album, if you're not looking to start with a comp.

You should hear (Tom waits albums): Closing time or Blue valentine.

You certainly do want to see Ms Newsom live; I've seen her twice (one was a(n) "Ys" show, with orchestra) and she was superb both times.
