Nice avatar btw and nice to hear the story behind it! What books you've read recently/and reading at the moment?

I average like 35 books a year so I'll stick to the ones that I thought were significant. Hermann Hesse - Demian, Narcissus and Goldmund, The Glass Bead Game, Peter Camenzind, Under the Wheel, Yannis Varoufakis - The Global Minotaur, Vincent Bevins - The Jakarta Method, David Graeber - Bullshit Jobs, Strugatsky Brothers - Roadside Picnic, Bart D. Ehrman - What the Bible Really Says About the End, Chris Brennan - Hellenistic Astrology, Sadeg Hedayat - The Blind Owl, Apostolos N. Athanassakis - The Orphic Hymns, Robert Service - Kremlin Winter, Pär Lagerkvist - The Dwarf, Art Spiegelman - Maus, Eugene Thacker - Infinite Resignation, Orlando Figes - Revolutionary Russia, Lucian - True History. A mix of fiction and non-fiction. I read a lot about the history of religion (mostly Christianity, Islam, Judaism and ancient Mediterranean religions, some dharmic religions), politics, economy and history.

I mean, instrumentally speaking it would be difficult to pull off for many of their albums. There are too many layers of guitars and effects. The most recent album might actually work better in that regard. By the way, Christian did actually address the subject of playing live in that infamous Bardo Methodology interview and he agreed it would never happen. Not because it's too difficult to play but because they wouldn't be able to truly convey their vision in a regular live performance - whatever that may mean. Perhaps he's thinking of more of a wild performance art piece rather than some guys and a drummer prancing about on a stage.

That is a gross exaggeration. I listen to music for perhaps 4 - 8 hours a day nowadays, which is pretty tame by my standards. Just check my history. You see, in 2012 I had close to three times my current annual number of scrobbles. I do let my audio player run while I'm cooking or sitting on the loo but that's about it. Other than that I'm always present.

I actively listened to all of this. I never let something run on a device and leave. I'm too conservative about electric power use for that. I don't really do vacations but I used to visit people outside my area or even in other countries once or twice a year. I guess most of my travelling was metal festival related in recent years, though. As for that "parents' house" - my mother died when I was 14 and my father ran off the day he found she was pregnant so he wasn't really in the picture.

What are your top releases of this year so far? I feel like 2019 was full of aotys in the black metal genre, but I am quite lost about new releases.

Thank you. Well, I've never been big on Teitanblood but there's this one track I like a lot - Sanctified Dysecdysis. As for the new album, I feel like they've stayed true to their roots. This album is very much in line with their previous work. This one guy I talked to actually preferred Death but for me they're about the same. It's surprising to see that the new album has much higher ratings on Rateyourmusic.com than any of their previous full-lengths. Can't relate.

Deathspell Omega - The Furnaces of Palingenesia, Sinmara - Hvísl Stjarnanna, Andavald - Undir skyggðarhaldi (this might be an unusual pick in my part). I wanted the Aoratos debut to be great, also got to see them live in Iceland (the show was a disaster, by the way) but Kyle's new style is generally too melodic and too heavy on synthesizers for me. I just want dissonant riffs and blast beat.

Oh, the greatest disappointment was the new Misþyrming, though. They've gone soft on me. The new album is too melodic. The band is increasingly turning into some kind of post-black/progressive/rock thing. I don't like it. Speaking of Dagur, check out the Skáphe/Wormlust collaboration.

They had lots of technical problems and delayed playing for some 20 - 30 minutes, which caused them to skip half the songs they were going to play. Once they actually started playing, the sound was awful. I mean, we did recognize the songs but some instruments were barely audible. It may have been the drums that bothered me the most, I don't remember for sure. Some people were so bothered to it that they tried to talk to the sound guy during the performance. He just shrugged and said it was out of his control. One guy later claimed that the band asked the sound guy to give them full control over the sound, routing all mics through their own audio interface that came with this laptop next to the drummer, effectively reducing the the sound guy's choices to the volume of a single mono DI. The story is dubious, though.

I was considering talking to the band after the show but I generally try not to bother the artists at venues. I respect their privacy, especially when they're hanging out with friends. Fans imposing themselves like that are just cringe-worthy. I mean, I did briefly talk to three bands but I wasn't chasing them around the venue or anything like that. It depends on the person, too. Sturla Viðar of Svartidauði got pretty angry at some guy who was talking to him and was about to throw a punch. Security came. I'm not sure what the story was, though.

Wow, thanks for this great explanation! You did everything right when decided not to bother musicians after show. Me personally try to talk with band members only if they came to the crowd.

Oh, it's not my blood. The singer of Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult repeatedly spat fake blood on me during De Mortem et Diaboli IV in Berlin. She may have specifically targeted me because of my white t-shirt. It's one of their live gimmicks, apparently, which I was previously unaware of. People around me seemed irritated. "Why would you even go to a black metal show wearing a white t-shirt?" The bus ride to the apartment I was staying at was awkward. People around me stopped talking and gave me uncomfortable looks. Had to throw away the shirt, too.

That video has fragments of 3 tracks, they are for the next material, however having 'lost' the drummer just complicates things concerning the studio sessions planned. Now everything will delay significantly. I have the guitar lines of those tracks with metrics and the lyrics recorded just as 'drafts' for personal listening. They were meant to be used as a guide for the drummer. https://www.facebook.com/PrecariaBlackMetal/videos/vb.408504382586649/572813262822426/?type=2&theater That's an excerpt of one of the draft tracks, it still didn't have the vocals on it. At the end you can hear how it sounds naturally, without the camera audio affecting.

That track is darker than their previous work, less melodic but has a more chaotic essence. I also took a listen to another one from this new album but the entire song was made of the same chords so I think they could've done a better work, still need to listen the rest of the album.

I'm not very fond of them either, but for me the riffs were sweet enough to overcome that. Never heard about Kafirun before. That track sounded decent, but ultimately not something I haven't more or less heard before.

I wouldn't call them clones, but heavily influenced by those crazy Frenchmen. I would say that for me personally, Svartidaudi came the closest. Technically incomparable and much more primitive, but they write memorable and at the same time intriguing riffs with a strong non-cheesy melodic undertone. On the death metal pole, Ulcerate. Everything is Fire is stunning, probably my favorite dm record ever. The songwriting on their last one was lacking imo, but still, they are going strong, I saw them live a year and a half ago and they are as sharp as they are on the record.

You have to be, that number is insane :D Cant blame you tho, they are untouchable. I am mostly listening to them while working out/being outside so the scrobbles of those long sessions are left out and as a consequence my DsO number is not rising much at all. Oh well :D. I have been all over that Ignis Haereticum album for two days now, its quite an easy listen, I am getting old I suppose as I more and more adore these slow dissonant melodies, without a slab of complexity and frantic, all over the place riffing. But those DsO influenced bands are trying too hard composing something truly extraordinary, and they are pretty much failing, all or at least most of them. Its good and worthy of a listen but there is no staying power, and compositionally they are miles away from DsO standards. I see you are on Voidcraeft binge. A lot of his work sounds to me like different variations of 3 or 4 riffs. But what do I know :D

I see you are still holding a record for the most DsO plays. Good guy. Regarding the new Nightbringer, I heard it only twice so far, both times during doing something, with like 30% of attention, so making any conclusions would be stupid, but I was thrown off by those synths a little, it was totally unexpected. Still, I wouldn't go so far, comparing it to Dimmu Borgir or any other simplistic symphonic crap. It will take some serious time to fully process it. In other news, have you heard of Ignis Haereticum? I am still waiting for them to fix their bandcamp page so I can finally hear the whole thing. http://ignishaereticum.bandcamp.com/album/luciferian-gnosis. Could be a very pleasant surprise of this year.

I haven't checked it out yet. The event is this weekend so I'm still very busy, with a lot of stress actually. But from next week and on I'll be much more available to do other things, including stuff related to the material of my side project. I'll give it a proper release, so I must find someone who can help me with the artwork. I have the pictures but I need them to have the text and some effects... So it would be hard for me (as I don't own a computer) to work with that.

kinda struck me as such but there's something to the incoherent lyrics in dso and especially portal which add appeal, like they're trying to communicate something but you don't know what. mysteries like that are part of the advantage of being such a reclusive group. at least, looking at those lyrics can't help but incite some curiosity

not making fun at all, i'm totally impressed. after listening through their big trilogy recently and reading their lyrics i still have no fucking idea what their philosophy is - i get a theistic satanist element from it but the narrative progression between SMRS, fas and paracletus seems really murky. could you enlighten me?

Dear qattle, I don't see any Deathspell Omega tracks in your top tracks for the last month. You should scrobble some, unless you want Deathspell Omega to feel left out. Best wishes always, T.Rider
