I have no idea what you mean by crazy because I'm so accustomed to it :D Although, judging by the way most Russian people spell nowadays, they agree with you :D By the way, I don't think I recommended them before (I only got into them fairly recently myself), but there's a really great Russian band АукцЫон. They're tagged as avant-garde psychedelic Russian rock... I guess that's a fitting description. They've got an interesting and pretty aggressive style with a great sax player that reminds me of David Jackson, and a very expressive leader. I uploaded them for Adrian once, here's the link http://www . megaupload . com/?d=ACMHVQVD (remove the spaces, obviously). The concert album "Девушки поют" features especially excellent musicianship because it was recorded with big foreign jazz musicians!

Regardless of meaning, it's got kind of a bipolar feel with the contrasting moods and "When the madness comes...", the feeling of uncertainty and such. Just the vibe I get from it. Though I suppose such is the nature of going through puberty anyway.

Either way I'm glad for the attention to and interpretation of Hammill's works :)

Joł joł, Zuza Kunert nie grzeszy rozumiem. W sumie to wyglądem jeszcze mniej.

No hurry, I'm totally out of inspiration at the moment, I've got a case of another-wasted-summer blues :D (D:). Niemen's stuff is, as always, an ambiguous experience for me, I did always love "Dziwny Jest Ten Swiat", though.

Russia sucks and has no future :P But the language, yeah. English and Russian for me are like my left and right hand respectively - English used less, but still very natural to me. From time to time I get the urge to write a poem or something and I've written in both Russian and English and from that point of view I find Russian to be much, much more flexible and interesting. And the rhythmics are really different, trying to translate a Hammill song in rhythm is hard!

W sumie kompozycyjnie przypomina Enigmatic Niemena, jedna epicka kobyła, a później takie bardziej a'la ludowe piosnki. :-) Jak się czujesz w klimatach Grechuta & Anawa?

Nice! I downloaded them once long ago, actually, when my taste was different, but didn't like them at all. As for folk-rock, I'm not a fan, and to find anything worthwhile in the sea of shit that is Russian rock you've gotta search for it intentionally and very carefully, so there may be good stuff, but I just don't know it. A cult Soviet/Russian band, Aquarium, comes to mind - they're often characterised as playing folk-rock, but they're actually something like eclectic art-rock. So - here's just a fun song by them, regardless of genre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke2dpWAhUCY

Well, it's a pretty well-known fact that LZ liked to "borrow" music, especially all that bluesy stuff from the first 3 albums, but I was a bit surprised about the intro from Stairway (oh well, never liked the song anyways :D).

Good stuff. I think this is the first band I've heard from Spain (from other hispanic countries plenty, but none from Spain itself). More impressive than the other hipspanic stuff I've heard, professionally done and a wholesome work, even if it does borrow the progressive part of their music from British prog pretty straightforwardly. That's the weak point of the album - the mix of Spanish tunes and prog may be original, but overall it doesn't sound very original, just professionally done. At least to my taste. Still, very enjoyable!

The customary preface: I probably asked this before, bla-bla-bla. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on who the "Undercover man" is. I'm attempting to do a nice little literary translation of the song, but one of the bigger problems is choosing an adequate equivalent for "Undercover man". I've heard an interesting interpretation of the song from a VdGG old-time fan, promised not to repost it, but the general idea is that it's about Hammill going through puberty. I had similar thoughts at some point, but I'm not convinced and overall not sure what to make of the song.

Especially "Just Good Friends". I always thought it was addressed to a woman, but it seems it's quite a testament to what a hard time Hammill had keeping it up in the music industry. Also, the ending is just perfect, they couldn't have done it any better!

Great programme, I just randomly found it on a bootleg torrent tracker today when looking for a Hammill bootleg DVD coincidentially of the same year (didn't find the DVD though). The performances are great and, as Hammill himself states it, intimate. And, of course, the insight on some of the songs is very interesting.

I don't think it should require logging in... It's pretty self-explanatory, there's a blue button with an arrow, click it, and the next page says in English "Your download link will appear after wait". Now if you don't see that button, then yeah.

Well, he does have some nice short stories, but, I remember, in some interview well into his career, when asked whether he would write any more prose, he said that songs fit him much better. I loved the phrase "The bloke who couldn't dance and talked funny." :D

In live performances Hammill is more of a bard though in a most poetic sense, as in getting his poetry through, making it heard simply because it is his passion. Which is kind of funny, since bards are generally a Soviet/Russian term. Anyways, have you seen on Youtube the performance of Hammill & Stuart Gordon in the Rosengarten book store? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dERKiry0x1w

Reminds me of a magazine article http://cs1621.vkontakte.ru/u6407351/3516204/x_34f573cb.jpg. Prog rocker who invented punk :D Actually I kind of like the idea of Hammill as a punk, as in the idea that the raw matter behind his music is appreciated, as opposed to viewing him as pretentious and overly complicated. And he does relatively suck at guitar playing :D

Yeah, I don't really get where the comparisons come from, especially in vocal or writing style. Musically you can kind of compare Ziggy Stardust and Nadir's Big Chance, but that as far as I would go. Guitar is good :( I cleaned mine and put on new strings and for the umpteenth time I venture to learn something until the mood to do so passes. Hammill is good in that he has simple acoustic songs which require only some basic chords and expressive singing :D

Good stuff! Though you already recommended it to me before, and I liked it. Well, kind of, I've got an ambivalent attitude towards Niemen's music - though I think it's very good, I haven't actually "got it" yet, and his voice is... frankly, kind of annoying at times. This must be what the people feel who are put off from VdGG by Hammill's voice :D It would probably help if I understood the words, but I don't. I see you're enjoying Bowie quite a bit, what do you think of the comparisons people draw between him and Hammill?
