Beefheart is easily one of my favorite artists of all time. The mixture of his insane lyrics, vocals, odd instrumentals, and the random nature of it all add up for an interesting listen. The first listen to Trout Mask Replica sucks, but after several listens everything molds together and you get sucked into Beefheart's child-ish world.

Well most people start out by listening to Frank Zappa's stuff first, and then after getting through a decent chunk of his discography, move on to Beefheart. His best album is obviously Trout Mask Replica, but starting out at more entry-level albums is probably a better idea, such as Safe As Milk or Mirror Man.
