great, thanks for the info- i think from that I'll go for the first album, I'm more predisposed to effects-laden guitar than punky/garagey sounds :)

I'm the same really, I am usually a year or two behind on new releases! have been enjoying the Hookworms album though. my favourite new discovery of recent years would be The Psychic Paramount- very noisy spacerock! I am afraid to say I am not familiar with Deerhunter (and always get them mixed up with Deefhoof!) how would you define their sound?

I like it, but it's no great leap forward or anything (and not as good as Loveless, although it does have some things over it like a better drum sound). apart from the last few tracks it could easily have been released in 1993! my fave is In Another Way- it's so twisted and psychedelic. and yes I was at the Birmingham show too! thoroughly enjoyed it. aside from obviously the massive guitars, it was great to hear the rhythm section properly in a live setting as well. so have you been particularly enjoying any new bands lately?

ah yes well it funny that you use that word 'atmosphere' because I do agree that it's what makes a good singer-songwriter stand out from the crowd.. I'll check her out! I am still tempted a bit by MBV. I didn't go and see them last time because I had a scepticism about reunions, but all the reviews were excellent! will be interesting to see if the mooted new album comes out too :)

ah well i'm jealous too. ATP is always special! what form did the installation take? yeah I've seen Sharon Van Etten mentioned in a lot of year-end lists. maybe I should check her out.. thing is singer-songwriters aren't usually my thing. what made her so good? re: MBV, well it's still a maybe at the moment- I like them but i'm not a massive acolyte or anything. still would like to see them, but it's a long way to go!

just realised I forgot to tell you how the Dirty Three were. as you can guess they were brilliant. they were so powerful in such a small venue, and they played the rarely performed Lyllaby for Christie! Jim's drumming is just gobsmacking at times.. so how was ATP?

I guess you'll just have to keep an eye on the lineups for the Deerhunter/TV on the Radio ones. still plenty of bands to be added, I guess that will tip you either way. my highlights for the 10 years one were Bardo Pond, Explosions in the Sky, Dirty Three, Melvins, and Sleepy Sun.. but the lineup was just packed, only a couple of bands were even close to disappointing! also just seen you're going to the BRMC B'ham gig.. just added it to my list too!

oh I know what you mean Amanda, ATP is one of the best festivals for discovering new acts. I think because of the curation aspect, there is a common thread that binds the lineup together. if I had the chance I'd definitely try and make it a regular thing like you do. I've been to two- the ATP vs the Fans in 2007, and 10 years of ATP in 2009. both had insane lineups, wouldn't even know where to start with the highlights! if I was going to the National one I'd definitely try and catch Stars of the Lid, the Antlers and Kurt Vile. is it me or do they just have a better 'feel' than other festivals too.. a real sense of community?

yeah the RAH was great, I particularly enjoyed the string section which added a depth to the new songs. the only thing was that the sound was a little muddy for me (but I guess depends where you are standing). I see you are going to the National ATP- wish I was going to an ATP this year but none of the lineups seem quite good enough for me to part with my money :( ! who are you looking forward to seeing?

ah man I thought as much.. ah well I'll guess I'll get a chance to see them again sometime! You & Me is one of my favourite albums of recent years. the Spiritualized show was great, there wasn't much of an audience there but they played a very interesting setlist, including 2 brand new songs and an old Spacemen 3 song. I was at the Royal Albert Hall show too!

so how was the Walkmen show? got a feeling you're gonna make me jealous.. never seen them live :(

If it was curated by gybe it certantly will have lots of good stuff. :)

Hi the tickets should be fine, but not sure when deerhunter are on. It looks like the event finishes at 2pm but think there is some djs playing as well. ATP was great. What did you think of the venue?

not much around town and miles from anywhere, but a great beach and loads of junk food....and the venues themselves are okay. not as rough around the edges as Camber...

Yeah this will be my 5th time to a Minehead ATP. what about you? line up is looking goood. glad they have now allowed us to pick people from previous atps for second round...

i'd say seven swans is a good place to start, his most accessible, simple album (i.e. not too many often irritating interludes) and arguably his best. The Transfiguration off that album is truly brilliant. illinois is also a fairly definitive sufjan album with some real gems on but some filler to be skipped through. Predatory Wasps would be my pick off that album.

hey i'm pretty good thanks, how about you? aye i found you from the of montreal gig page, i've started adding more people on last fm, i like looking at people with similar taste and trying new things. ryan adams always comes up as something i should try but he just seems kind of dull to me, like not in the same league as elliott smith but I'll give him another chance. personally i would recommend sufjan stevens to most people lol, you've given him 44 plays i see but i fucking love him! my theory is that out of the current indie landscape, he will be the one looked back on as a real talent, the way he composes and constructs his songs astounds me, wonderful stuff
