no one has ever gotten to the kernel of princess luna's character like cats millionaire repeatedly did. its in her name: she's luna, she's earth's natural satellite. she's not always quite there, not quite on earth, but she traces it, in dreams or otherwise. she wants to belong from outside it, she wants a part of it and tries really hard and it doesn't always work but she's working towards it, towards being in the world instead of just floating over it, alienated and confused. and no one will ever write about discord like cats millionaire did. discord is dizzy, he's the embodiment of chaos, evil, and disharmony, and he doesn't really want to be any of those things - they're manifestations of an unbridled self-loathing he conceals which a jester facade because he doesn't think he deserves anything, any goodness or place in the world except to be hated. it leaves him confused. he wants to be like fluttershy, a seemingly ontological good, the inverse of his alleged ontological evil

because he's tired of being lonely. and no one will ever quite capture what worked about equestria girls and twilight being human for a while as cats millionaire did. twilight goes to a world that's all wrong and her body is all wrong - and her alicorn body back in the pony world is confusing and strange - and she has to master these things despite how difficult, confusing, and uncompromising they are. spike had a similar experience in dragon quest, which oh my god cats millionaire sang about too. and luna struggled with being jealous and alienated and in a world in which she didn't belong, before and after her banishment; twilight similarly struggled with alienation as well as a body and customs that were alien to her in equestria girls. and in other twilight, human twilight is barely described. all she really is is this thing that happens to her, a phantasmagoric dream of belonging for which a moral is given but no conclusion. like idk, i think i could talk about fun fun fun forever

the chorus of the title track sounds kind of like its underwater because pinkie pie has been sent back to the mirror pool. it's interesting in that episode actually, 'too many pinkie pies', this strange line of thought that i think underlines a lot of the shows comedy as well, particularly with fluttershy.

what twilight and friends conclude is that what will signify which pinkie is the true, authentic pinkie pie is that she will do what is most unlike pinkie - watching paint dry. the most authentic pinkie pie is one who can be a little unlike herself. and throughout the show, often the crux of an episode or its comedy is a character being unlike themself, authentically or not. trixie in magic duel, destinies in magical mystery cure, personalities in the return of harmony, fluttershy as saddle ranger, applejack in the last roundup, fluttershy in putting your hoof down, rainbow dash in read it and weep, pinkie pie in party of one, and so on. by being not themselves, the characters find in themselves what is the most authentic part of themselves. this kind of resolution of contradictions of character by letting them compete and learning from that is idk something about authenticity and authentic belonging being intertwined or the authenticity of imperfection. it goes over my head a bit.
