The In Debt album compliation sounds like a wispy Joy Division, so shouldnt be that challenging (so long as you dont have a problem with Ian's vocals). Perhaps you might start there. It's only after that that they got into sampling. I see you've been listening to Throwing Muses. I used to be a big fan of theirs up to and including The Real Ramona. After that I think they lost it, but up till then they were one of the greats.
