I think it has to do with the capacity of the venues. In the U.K. they booked him at pretty large rock venues: London's Hammersmith Apollo (3,600 seats, most expensive seats 55 pounds) and Manchester's O2 Apollo (3,500 seats, most expensive seats 49.50 pounds). The Carré here in Amsterdam is a very prestigious theatre, quite small, an intimate historic place with only 1,750 seats. Tom Waits played there a few years ago and the tickets were 180 euros, up to 200+. I think that explains it... but it's still shit, of course. The Carré may be very nice, but I would rather see him at the Heineken Music Hall (similar to the U.K. venues) for 65 euros...
